as a person who has grown up in the shadow of san miguel beer, i have been amazed at the variety of beer that is available when i travel.

i'm looking into starting howme brewing mainly with the ingredients that are readily available in the country. i'm looking at brewing rice and making mead.

i'm a total noob so any guidance would be most appreciated.

thanks.

Mabuhay!! My wife is from Butuan. She was working in Manila when I met her online. We'll be going back to Butuan next year sometime to visit the in-laws, and bring them their new grand daughter to meet.

Here's a link to a blog of a Canadian living and brewing in the Philippines:

There's a link to the yahoo group for Philippine brewers on the site also.

Hi from a fellow Flip (by marriage ;))
My wife's parents are from Manila.

Matter of fact, I had Kari Kari for dinner tonight!

Welcome! Good luck with the mead, I'm getting ready to do my first mead soon.

This is quite a hobby you've chosen!

the blog is great!

strange, i'm being taught arnis by a canadian foodie. he too is looking at homebrewing.

Welcome!

Manila is a great place to visit and sip a few San Meguel, I have also had the change to visit Davoa and sip a few, I just did not like the idea of having a body guard at my side every second once I left the security of the Marco Polo Hotel (that was surrounded by guards with AK-47's). I do admit the women are nice and cheap!

I thought about what I wrote and I am not in any way degrading the PHL. It"s a great place and the people are wonderful. I was just a little uncomfortable during my two week in Davoa. And I could not find any other beer than San Meguel. Do they even import any beer?

I dunno about importing, Asia Brewing make Beer Na Beer. They also make Lone Star Light and Lone Star Ultra, I imagine under licence from Pabst (who owns Lone Star now, along with Schitz, Old Milwaulkee, Pearl and others. . ) No regular Lone Star, though. Kinda funny, as I cannot find Lone Star of any kind here in Florida, but you can get it in Philippines.

Drank plenty of San Mig while I was there, also had Beer Na Beer and Red Horse. In the provinces in Mindanao, I saw lots of banners for Gold Eagle, which is a product of San Miguel, but never tried it.

While in Butuan, my fiance, (now my wife) wouldn't let me leave the hotel alone. I never felt too unsecure during my time there, except for one instance when we were traveling from Butuan to Barobo in a rented van. The van broke down in the middle of nowhere, and everybody piled out. Her father opened the door of the van, motioned for me to get back in, and closed the door behind me. Guess that the area we where in wasn't too safe for a blonde haired, white 'kano to be.

My wife's sister-in-law wants us to go down to Gen. Santos City to visit. Not sure how comfortable I'll be that far south in Mindanao.... San Fransisco is as far south as I've been.....and that was the above mentioned trip in the van.

I did. For sure.
A few times as a matter of fact.
I'm not squeamish too.. Im a Brooklyn, NY born and raised guy who moved to Detroit. Not too much that I haven't seen as far as a ghetto or "bad" neighborhood..

I was warned by alot of relatives what it was like, but experiencing it was something else. I did get into a bit of trouble on our last day and had a bit of a fight with a local at my hotel. I walked away from the fight victorious, which turned out to be the worst move I could make. Nevertheless, our "vacation" was cut short 2 days early. :(

But there is no doubt about it.. There are some ****ty areas there, but there are some parts that are beautiful.
