I have recently decided to make yeast starters. From all the information i have gathered and read it seems to be very beneficial to your beer. So im trying to find some recommendations on a good stir plate to purchase but not too highly priced. I have read a few DIY projects and looked online for some fairly priced stir plates but it seem like most of these stir plates, both DIY and purchased ones have a capacity of about 2000 - 3000 ml, which according to Mr Malty and other readings will not accommodate the required pitching rate for a majority of my beers. Feedback please.

Geez, what types of beers are you making? I made my own stir plate, and I've never had to make a starter larger than 2000 mL. Do you exclusively make high gravity lagers or something? Are you changing the drop down box on the pitching rate calculator from "Simple Starter" to "Stir Plate"? That'll make the size of your starters go down tremendously.

Another option is to step them up incrementally, and that way you can get by with making smaller starters.

It is not so much that I will be making high gravity beers, its that i am in the middle of possibly going to 15-20 gallon batches and i want equipment that is sufficient enough to use for larger batches, i dont want to have to buy numerous items of the same type for different size batches if i could just buy a larger one to accommodate all batch sizes.

Wow, $42 is a good price. I am not sure that I could build one for under $20 so another $22 is well within the FWIF. I was seriously considering making my own.

Ahh, I see. I didn't think about larger batches. Thanks for explaining it to me :)
