Hey all, new brewer here.

So far I've only brewed a couple IPA's and a Blonde Ale for easy drinking. I was thinking of getting a coffee porter/stout going now that I have a good supply of homebrew around, I won't mind aging a beer for a while before I drink it. Im not very well versed in this style of beer, the one micro brew in my city has one called Stir Stick Stout, which they recently retired. I do like the Coffee Porter that mill street brewery puts out, so I was hoping to try my hand at a beer with a nice coffee flavor. I don't quite know the difference between a porter and a stout, everyone seems to have a different idea about the differences between the two. I was just wondering if anyone had a good extract recipe for a tasty coffee themed porter/stout.

Thanks!

I haven't made a coffee stout with extract before, but in my experience you just can't go wrong with any of Northern Brewer's recipes. I would give this one a shot:

The full instructions/ingredients list is here:

If you can't get hold of english dark crystal, go for a regular 80L or 120L crystal malt. Looks like a tasty recipe. Either of the extracts can be subbed for any light colored extract: light, extra-light, pilsen, pale etc.

Since the original stout was called a stout porter, I can see why you are slightly confused about the difference. Usually nowdays, the presence of roasted barley is the defining point of a stout but not everyone sticks with that definition. The usual idea is that a stout is stronger in flavor and alcohol than a porter. YMMV

There are a lot of porter recipes in our database here, many of them with comments about how they turned out and suggested changes. Some of them are coffee porters and you can make any porter a coffee porter by adding coffee. Take a look as some of the recipes and see how they are put together. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=126

There are a ton of recipes for other styles of beer too, worth looking through for ideas of other beers to make. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=82
