So get this. I am 22, and I think I look about my age. Today I visited a local winery and did some tasting, and eventually bought a bottle. No ID requested. Then an hour later, I went to the movie theater to see "Bruno" and was asked for my ID. WTF. I didn't even know they checked ID at the movies. One person thinks that I am absolutely over 21, but then another person thinks I might be under 17? You've got to be kidding me.

Then again, after seeing "Bruno," I'm convinced that this movie would be more potentially damaging to a minor than alcohol. (Although I thought the movie was hilarious.)

A few months ago, I got carded at the drugstore...while buying cold medicine!!

Mind you, I'm 45 years old. I'm told I look young for my age, but I certainly don't look under 21. Or under 31. :( Maybe under 41.

you'll get used to it. I'm 25 and still get carded all the time. I like to think of it as a compliment. When I'm 40, I'll look 30.

For me it depends on the establishment. I look older than I am but some places ID everyone, for everything. Some place barely look at you when you order.

I think the kids working at the movies are scared that they will get fired, arrested, or their parents called if they let a 16.5 year-old into an R movie.

I'm 38. I get carded ALL THE TIME. I don't mind, they are just doing their job.

But I do mind when they think I'm under 21 and almost don't sell me beer.

I'm 35 and I get carded all the time-- liquor store, bars and at the movies. I just take it as a compliment, that I think there must have been some government crackdowns and they have just swung far to the "must card everyone" side.

Yeah it could get to you if you let it but what the hay i dont let it bother
me iam 31 and i still get carded for lottery tickets and cigs. Not to long
ago i went into one of those indian ran stores to buy some beer and he asked
for id so i gave it to him he looks and ask me am i sure i was born in that
year. LOL just gave me something to smile about as i drank that crappy beer.:cross:

One time, I was at a bar for a quick drink and a bite to eat. They carded me, but not my son who was with me and was about 15 at the time! Now, he does look older, beard and all, but that was weird. Even some of you guys have seen a photo of my son and my husband and asked which is which. (My husband is the 54 year old, and my son is now 17- pretty obvious if you ask me).

I like to think I look younger than my age, but I'm lying to myself.

Does that mean your son ordered a drink?

Does that mean your son ordered a drink?

Yes. Until I stopped them. He ordered a Mike's Hard Lemonade.

This was in Michigan. In Wisconsin, it's perfectly legal to drink with your parents permission, so my kids have had an occasional drink with me if we're not driving. Neither one of my kids are drinkers, though. Oh, they like the idea of being "grown up" but don't really get into drinking. I think it's because they were raised without it being taboo, and they HATE beer!

They often see me brewing or having a glass of wine with dinner. To them, it's no big deal. Occasionally, my daughter (almost 20) will bring home a new guy whose eyes light up at the kegerator. She just shrugs and says, "Eh, my mom makes beer. And wine. And mead. And cider." and then she walks away.

sorry- didn't mean to derain your thread. Carry on! :off:

Being carded when I clearly am not even close to 21 just screams idiocy. The same grocery store will not card the retired patrons for 65+ yrs old discounts on dbl coupon wed will card for alcohol on the same purchase.

I was at a gas station last weekend. The guy in front of me was a big biker. He rode up on his harley, had a big grey beard, and a 12 pack of pabst. Now, to me...if you're able to drink pabst, they should just give it to you no questions asked.... but they carded him. He had to be at least 55.

I know Mobil gas stations (and alot of the grocery stores) around here are required to card you if you appear to be less that 45. I get the feeling they card everyone though so they don't offend anyone by saying they look old.

Not sure if it's a store or chain thing, but some of the local grocery stores make their cashier's input the date of birth into the register when someone buys beer, so it's easier to look at the ID than to make up a birthdate older than... ummm... 1988?

Some stores around here will card EVERYONE. For those places that are more discretionary, I was getting carded just about every time until I grew my beard last year (I'm 33). Without it, I looked about 17. With it, I don't know, but clearly people now acknowledge that I'm over 21, they hardly ever ask anymore.

I started to get grey in my hair in my twenties. I never get carded. But there are some places that would rather swipe my drivers license than do an override, so i just have it ready for them. Mostly Wal-mart or Meijer when I buy beer.

I've got the face of a twelve year old and I'm 25. I get carded at Wal-mart when I try to buy deodorant. Hahaha

A few years ago a my brother-in-law and I were checking out at a local grocery store. We had items for a barbecue including a number of 6 packs of micro-brews. I was not to surprised when I got carded at the time I was 34 and look younger than my years, but when they asked my brother-in-law for his I was amazed. He was of legal age (21 or 22) but I asked "Why did you card him when I was the one that put the items on the belt gave you my ID and had my wallet out to pay?" The cashiers replied " Our policy is that all members of a group purchasing alcohol must be of legal age". So I asked "if I had my 3 year old son in the cart you would not let me purchase this beer?" All I got from the cashier was a blank stare.

When I was 16 I tried to go to a movie and got carded. I didn't have a license yet so I tried another theater also with no luck. So I went to a liquor store and bought a case of Bud and didn't get carded.

Were you buying something with pseudoephedrine in it? Many states have laws regulating it due to its use in meth product.

As far as getting carded, its pretty ridiculous with some of the policies places have. I was in O'Hare airport one time having a beer during a layover, I saw a couple who was at least 65 get carded.

Another time, when I lived in MI, I was out bowling with some friends. MI licenses have the magnetic strip on the back, and they took my license to run it through the reader. Then, the bartender took my friend's license, from a state that doesn't have the strip. Turned it over, noted that there was no magnetic strip on it, proceeded to run it through the reader, and then looked confused when the reader didn't give any information.

im surprised they would use a magnetic strip for verification, wouldnt that be really easy to reprogram?
On second thought no easier than just making a fake license.. =)

I like getting carded for ETOH purchases, but I'm 43.

I do get offended if I DON'T get asked for ID when I use credit or debit card. Clearly written on the back is my signature and "PLEASE ID". I've even cancelled a purchase when the idiot cashier looked at the back of the card, swiped it and handed it back to me. Said I wouldn't shop there if they were unwilling to follow a simple step in card purchases that protects me and the store.

After age 21, when you get asked for ID, tell them 'Thank you!' and your life will be much easier.

I'm 23 and rarely get carded anymore. Before I grew my goatee, I looked like I was 12. I was always afraid they wouldn't let me into a bar or buy alcohol. Luckily it never happened. Exceptions are grocery stores, some restaurants and airports. Grocery stores have to put in a DOB for any alcohol purchase. Airports usually have a posted policy that they ID EVERYONE. I've seen them card people who look 70. If the person reacts the bartender just points to the sign.

The funniest ID mishap happened with my roomate at Wal-Mart. He was buying a pocket knife. Apparently you have to be older than 14 or 15 to buy a knife at Wal-Mart. My roomate was 22, has a goatee and very long dreadlocks. The clerk asked for his ID, which completely dumbfounded us.

For anyone considering just writing 'See ID' and not signing the card, on the back of most debit/credit cards not that the card requires a signature to be valid. Putting 'See ID' is not enough, and stores can (legally) turn you down and/or force you to sign the card in front of them (after checking you license) in order to use it on a purchase.
That is, unless you want to not be able to buy underwear at Walmart some day *chuckle, snort, chuckle*

...and that's why, next time, I want to get one of the credit cards with my picture imprinted in it.

I worked at theater back in my college days (early 2000s) and we were told to card anyone that looked under 28. Especially if they were bringing in kids that looked younger than 17 with them. I carded basically anyone that I thought could even have a chance at being under 30. Its easier to do that then try to explain to the boss how that 20 year old was able to bring in 5 13year olds to watch Scary Movie.

Its a job, and I'm not going to get fired just because you might get your feelings hurt that I carded you. My .02.

25 here...

im hardly ever carded. mind you i rock an 8'oclock shadow and dress like someone who just finished a 48 hour raid in the world of warcraft. there are the times that protocol falls over judgement and the apperently yougner generation asks me the dreaded "can i see your drivers license".

I've got you one better than a pocketknife.

Spray paint at Home Depot. Got carded buying a can of Rust Oleum a few months back. I think they had just put the policy in place and were carding everyone, because I've bought since and they haven't asked for ID again.

Blame those damn huffers! I could see if I walked into the store looking like this..

Just showing ya, the card is signed, but I also request they ask for ID. Just another small layer in the big Spidey web I use to protect my few, but very hard earned dollars!:D

I know that, I work at a restaurant that serves alcohol so I have to card people all the time, I was just commenting on the strange discrepancy of being carded at one place and not at another.

Yeah yeah yeah, I noticed that after i had posted "Just so you're aware..."
...so I changed it after the fact to reflect that you DID sign the card and I was an idiot for not reading more carefully :D

If you live in a city with a graffiti problem they might try and limit juvenile delinquents from getting ahold of spray paint?

(BTW: I 'ahold' a word? Google Chrome is dinging me for it...)

I'm 31 and rarely get carded for anything around home. A few months back I was in Boston and got carded for EVERYTHING, even tobacco purchases. Hell, I got carded in a convention dealer room before I could look at a dealer's porn comics selection. I have a beard and my 27-year old wife (well, 26 at the time, but still) was standing there with me.

Now the question is why was I buying horribly overpriced tobacco in MA when I live in VA? I should have brought my own from home, but I didn't think about it.

Im 27 and when I shave my beard I look 18 if that. Every time I shave I get carded for everything. Last time I shaved I got carded buying canned air at staples.

I've got the face of a twelve year old and I'm 25. I get carded at Wal-mart when I try to buy deodorant. Hahaha

I have the same problem. cashiers look at me and say, "Does your mom want you buying soda, son? there's an awful lot of sugar in it, you know."

nice avatar. I wonder if nietzsche ever got carded (or drank beer for that matter)

Well you said in your OP that you didn't know they carded at the theater.

The SWMBO got carded a year or so ago (I will not post her age on the internet I like being married) at food lion and she ran around the counter and hugged the cashier and told them they had made her day.
