Hey guys whats up? Alright, I want to start using gelatin to clarify my beer, but I need to know something b4 I start.

1) I know the proper way to use it is in the secondary, but can I still collect the yeast slurry and pitch into a starter/new wort if it has the gelatin in it?

Should I just forget about keeping the slurry's from the beers that I used gelatin in. Rather than getting it that way, should I just wash the yeast from the primary or get it from the krausen?

You collect the yeast from primary, so using gelatin in the secondary isn't a factor.

If you aren't reusing the yeast right away, yeast washing is recommended. It'll clean out the trub and the autolysed yeast and give you "cleaner" yeast to use in the next batch.
 
So washing the yeast will remove gelatin??

Naw, I like to take from the secondary b/c usually there is less trub, but he is saying that you should take from primary. You don't add gelatin till secondary stage, so there is no gelatin to wash from the slurry in the primary. In the primary you wash out hops and other junk. You can even harvest yeast from the krausen during the primary ferm process. Of course that's granted you're using an ale pale or some other food grade bucket with a lid you can take off to skim the krausen.

Poor jhonda, it doesn't seem like you’re getting a straight answer at all. I am also curious about using finings such as gelatin. If I throw something in my fermenter that will drop my yeast out of suspension, is it then ok to collect and use them like normal or did I ruin that opportunity by throwing in the finings?

On a side note, I’m wondering if I do everything to clear up my beer as best I can, including cold crashing, will there be any yeast in my beer left to carbonate in the bottles?
 
I don't have a good answer on the finings in primary, since I have never done that. I do always keep yeast from the primary, not the secondary, because although the yeast in the secondary is "cleaner", it's also the most stressed and least flocculant of the yeast in that batch. I don't think it's as good as quality as the yeast in the primary.

Even if you do use a secondary, and finings, there are still plenty of yeast in suspension to carbonate your beer. I've gone up to six weeks of lagering at 34 degrees, and still had great carbonation.
