Fruit Flies only like my beer....

So its summer and i got fruit flies in the house...

They seem to love my beer and just dive bomb into it like a Kamikaze. So i thought hey why dont i leave a beer out so they all can commit suicide in the best way possible (pool of beer).

I find this morning not 1 made it into the beer.... seems like they only want to be in the beer when its one i intend on drinking. Bastards....

Try putting out a shot glass with some apple cider vinegar in it. Add a couple drops of soap. You should get several drownings out of it. It may take a few days but you will eventually get them all if you remove breeding grounds for them like old fruit and clean your darn kitchen.

I also stretch plastic wrap over the top and poke tiny holes to trap them in there. Just in case they don't want to go swimming.

Also, pour really hot water down your drains. They like to live in drains because of the water.

And if you have plants, they live in the moist dirt.

Most of all, remember that fruit flies are not harmful. Feel secure in that knowledge when you are drinking your beer and feel a tiny little speck of something sliding down your throat.

Just keep the little airborne cesspools of infectious organisms away from the fermenter.

I've found fermenting rye really attracts fruit flies, and back with my fermentation setup of several years ago (before I could have an adequate seal except the blowoff airlock), I lost one batch that they turned into acetic acid.

Put a thin layer of sand on top of the dirt... the flies can't get in or out of the sand and that takes care of that.
