Hey gang, I've busted up the following for a brew day tomorrow - hoping for a nice IPA.

8lbs 2-row
1.2lbs Crystal 60
0.5lbs Crystal 20

I have some really nice flaked rye here and I was thinking about using 1-1.5lbs as my grain bill is currently a bit light (ran out) and I would like to experiment a bit with the flakes. At 1.5lbs it'll be 12% of the bill. Too much? I've got about 2lbs and change, so I could even increase...

Thanks!

you do realize that you have almost 18% crystal malt in this IPA recipe don't you? That blows the taste buds right off my tongue even thinking about that.

I would drop c-60.

If you want that added color, add only 4% or so of C-40. Then you can add the rye flakes if you would like for some rye flavor/character. But i'm thinking that with the flaked rye you are going to get massive body and head from this beer if you use 12%. So mash low.

yeah drop c 60 and use 1# rye.
good luck!
you might not have enough grain for a
good 5g IPA, so you might need to drop
volume/hops, or go get more 2row

yeah, i was working with the bottom of my 55lb bag and was sure i had at least 10lbs in there. I guess my eye isn't a very good measure.

In any case, I cut back on the c-60. I'll go ahead with the rye as I can use the extra fermentables, and I'd like to try it. I might try to empty (bottle) one of my 3gal carboys tomorrow and cut the batch down to size. Thanks for the advice.
