Hey there, I'm doing my first kit today to get a feel for brewing. My question was I bought a 30 litre bucket from my kit store but it has no hole for a bung and airlock. If I ferment a normal 25l batch in the bucket with thr lid on, would the lid end up popping off or is there enough space to allow the gases to build up. Thanks for any info.

It will blow off. For a temp fix till your able to get a bung and an airlock i would drill a hole in it so you can SQUEEZE a tube into it and put the tube into a pitcher of water to act like an air lock. Im not sure of the size of the hole to drill to match the size needed for an airlock.

This might point you in the right direction.

Welcome! You'll need some way to relieve the pressure. You could just set the lid on loosely on top of the fermenter or you could drill a hole in the lid for a grommet and airlock. You need space for the krausen, but the CO2 produced requires some way to relieve pressure.

Unless there's a leak somewhere in the seal, the lid will pop off. Probably with a big splash and a mess. Do yourself a favor and drill a hole to fit a bung or at least a little gasket to hold an airlock. If you can't get back to the store to buy an airlock, look up "blowoff hose" or "blowoff tube" on this forum and see what you can do with more common household items.

K I have a bung and airlock as well, cause I also have a 25l glass carboy. I just figured that wouldn't be able to hold all the fermentation
