I am using a 5 gallon soda keg I got from a friend it has the pin fittings it does not have a purge can I just purge it by depressing the gas in fitting im a little reluctant to try the beer out fitting or will the purge on the regulator work

The gas poppet will definitely work - and should be shower-free if the keg wasn't over-filled.

The PRV on the regulator won't relieve keg head space pressure if there's an anti-backflow-preventer (aka "check valve") between the keg and the regulator body (which is always a good thing to have - see "over-filled keg")...
