First hop addition

After adding the DME, do we bring it back to a boil and then add hops?
Or do we add the malt and hops then start the 60 minute timer?

Yesterday we killed the heat, added the DME, brought it back to a boil then started the 60 minutes.

Ok cool thats what I thought.
About an hour ago I rewatched the brewing video with the two guys that brew in the kitchen, and they added the hops right after they put the DME in. It wasn't boiling at all.

It didn't seem right so i had to ask.

It is best to boil for 15 minutes before adding hops, in case a boil over occurs. Usually boil overs happen in those first 15 minutes, and if a boil over occurs after hops have been added, especially right upon addition, it messes up your hop utilization.

You start your boil timer once the hops go in. Those are generally boiled for 60 minutes. You don't have to time the extract boiling.

You can add the hops when you add the DME- it doesn't really matter. But start the timer once the wort is boiling and the hops are in it.

Adding hops and some extract before reaching a boil is the extract version of First Wort Hopping.

Hey not to hijack the thread but i have a question about extract brewing.

I'm looking at brewing a white IPA similar to Dechustes chainbreaker. Wanting to know if I can boil the bittering hops then add the LME at the end? I want to keep the LME as light in colour as possible. Or should I add half the LME at the start and remainder at flame out with my aroma hops?

You could add about 1/3 of the LME at the beginning, you want some malt in there
