Howdy Ya'll, I'm giving the ole partial mash a try tomorrow. It's gonna be a Sierra Nevada pale ale type of beer. The recipe calls for 1 tsp. of Irish moss. The LHBS neglected to include this when I picked up the ingredients. What will happen if I go ahead and brew it up without the Irish moss. Will it only result in a longer clearing time? I guess the real question is, will it affect the overall flavor of the beer? Thanks Fellas!

Well, Irish moss is useful to help clear the beer. I forget it at least half the time, though! There isn't any flavor or other impact on the beer- it just works to help coagulate proteins in the kettle for a clearer beer.

My first brew didn't call for it. It was a brown ale that I bottled Sunday. It's already clear. I couldn't resist and chilled it yesterday. Upon pouring it had decent carbonation but, it tastes like it needs the required three weeks to further condition. It was good but real hoppy.

I think I'll skip going to the LHBS to get the Irish moss. Doesn't sound too critical. Thanks guys.

Death, I'll be using your PM technique tomorrow, thanks big guy.

Make a brewday check list for standard tasks or items that you do not want to forget. It really helps.
