I found a dead beetle floating on the surface of hot wort. No clue how long it was in the wort for. Do I need to worry about an infection? The wort temp was 115F when I took the beetle out.
 
Nope.
Just repeat the following phrase 3 times:
Beetle juice, Beetle juice, Beetle juice!

Seriously though, it'll be fine.
Get your yeast going and they'll destroy anything the beetle brought to the party.
If he brought anything at all. Sounds like it wasn't a BYOB party anyway.

If the beetle was boiled you're probably fine.

I'm paranoid, so I'd reboil it no matter what. There is a saying among people in the food industry (or at least the ones that I've dealt with) "you can't sanitize dirt".

Did your kettle have a lid securely covering the opening after you took it off the burner?

No I don't think it was boiled and I don't have a lid on the pot during boiling.
 
I took the beetle out and then sprayed the top of the wort with Star San

I like that you sprayed the surface of the wort with starsan! It reminds me of the Chris Rock skit when his momma suggests you should "put some tussin on it."
 
I suspect your beer will be just fine. I think you will really regret not having left it in, though. You could have bottled it. Like a tequila worm.

Haha I love that skit! I sprayed the top to help kill whatever I possibly can! Lol
 
Wtf... I just opened the lid on the fermenter and found three months (???) floating on the surface of beer! How on earth did they get there? I tasted some of the beer and it doesn't smell or taste infected. I've brewed a bunch of batches before and I've never experienced.
 
Honestly, the yeast and alcohol should take care of any infectious baddies in the brew. I didn't mean to make light of your predicament. I just couldn't help myself. My sense of humor might be a little warped :fro:
 
Heck that might be a lost one with the gnats. I'd keep it going but good LORD man keep the dang bugs out of your beer. "Stay alert, stay alive"
 
It's fine, if you got your yeast in there at a decent pitch rate, they'll out compete any baddies that came with the bugs. Here in Warrenton we have an awful stink bug problem. If one of these guys makes it into the mill, mashtun, boil, or fermenter I guarantee it will ruin a brew. Always have to double check, in particularly because they love tight spaces like valves and hosebibs.

If you're really worried I'm sure you could just spray some more starsan on it. :ban: (Sorry couldn't resist)

I know they didn't get in through the airlock. Probably when I was boiling the beer. I was brewing outside at night and some bugs must have gotten curious.

I would think that if you boiled hard enough little gnats wouldn't make it in. I boil on my back patio under a parking lot style and size light that I installed just 7' above my boil kettle. This is so I can see very good at night, and I've only ever ended up with one large carpenter bee in my boiled wort. Those are rather strong bugs vs a gnat. I'm sure you're right though. I'm just wondering about your chilling method. I use a immersion chiller and I've cut a little notch in my kettle lid for the arms of my chiller and I also use a sanitized microfiber cloth to wrap around the arms/handles of the chiller where they come out of the lid along with a large clip to hold the material tight around the chiller in order to keep any small bugs or anything from the air from getting in. No issues at all yet, 28 batches deep in 11 months. I just had that one carpenter bee when I wasn't doing that and when I first started.

Do you mean three MOTHS? :confused: Three Months is a good time to age beer, but not moths.

The odor from the stink bug is due to trans-2-decenal and trans-2-Octenal. The smell has been characterized as a pungent odor that smells like coriander.

I would think it would help in a Witbier...... :D

I dont know what you read that says it smells like coriander, but Ive smelled stink bug before, and Ive smelled coriander before... They do NOT smell alike haha :drunk:

What kind of beetle are we talking about here? Like, a standard fly? One of those giant green things? It could really help us in the naming process :D
