I'm not happy with the micron choices on the commonly available filter pads. I also make beer and use pleated cartridge filters for that. I've never seen anything on using cartridge filters for wine. Is there a reason for that? One can pretty much get any micron rating they want plus the cartridges are washable/reusable. Sounds like maybe a good idea to me -- yes/no?

Cartridge filtration is common in winemaking. You can buy filters and filter housing at StPats and GWKent. I bought a unit from StPats that I use for sterile membrane filtering of the wine on the way to my bottler. This is the typical use for these type of filters in winemaking. StPats has a range of filter pore sizes from 20um down to 0.22um and a membrane filter at 0.45um.

The issue with cartridge filters is that they do not have the capacity that pad filters have. It is much easier to add a handful more plates to a plate&frame filter if you need. For larger volumes, plate&frame (or cross-flow) filters are superior to cartridge filters. Also, I get better filtering from my 0.45um pad filters than the 0.45um polypropylene cartridge filter.
