This is hearsay from a former coworker of mine who used to work in sales and still has access to these numbers. I won a bet that Matilda sales would fall off with the horribly redesigned bottle and packaging, and the conversation drifted into GI in general. What I gathered was that there is a lot of pressure from the High End now on 'fixing' GI sales.

I really miss the old GI bottles for Matilda and Sofie. It's weird, aren't the 12oz version of the sisters in the older style 12oz bottles with the white labels?

Sofie is. Matilda was moved into the Nickleback of designs over a year ago.

Got a text from my sister this evening while she was at a suburban bar drinking Matilda, and she asked me when they ruined the label design.

Felt appropriate for the thread tonight. I hadn't seen the redesigned label in a while apparently, but holy **** is it bad. Remember when we praised Goose Island for the clean label designs they were using for Sofie / Matilda / Pepe Nero / etc...?

The horrendous label was designed by the kids in New York in early 2017.

At the time, after seeing the 'winning' redesigned label, I went to the then director of ops at GI to ask him for his thoughts. His response was, "...you should have seen the designs that this beat out."

And they’re working on a redesign now, dunno when the rollout will be tho

This thread: I am confused about the marketing concepts used in this "press release!"

Also this thread: As an expert in packaging design I find these labels lackluster!

It doesn't take an expert in packaging design to predict that the Matilda labels are/were going to be awful for sales. It merely takes an alcoholic calling drinking craft beer a hobby (i.e. the target market?) to understand that 'this thing looks not good'.

Wish I had been in town for this.
It was a really good day. Not sure any event is ever going to replace Lions, Tigers, Beers (not that i ever made it out for that, but my friends always had fun), but Pints for Paws is pretty fun and we had tons of fun hanging out eating great food, drinking great taps, the bottle share beforehand was excellent. It was a really A+ event.

Like 5 days late to this conversation, but I too really liked the minimalist white labels for the GI Belgian line. It reinforced their push upmarket, during that whole era when they pushed food pairings, cooking with beer, and their first foray into NPR sponsorship. The bottles didn't look out of place in the wine section, which I'm sure was the point.

I'm also not surprised that GI lost so much ground in Chicago, given the embarrassment of options in both taprooms and packaged beers from other markets. Is the sales decline out of line for some of the other old-hat breweries, though? I remember reading something a while back about how Sam Adams and a few of the other former big names were all struggling against the tide of novelty.

I love that this band of goofy ass people do weird **** to amuse themselves. Easily my favorite brewery from both a beer and philosophy perspective.

I really wanted to attend that especially since I am a Campari drinker but just wasn’t in the cards that night. Looked like a good time.

Hi everyone, I'm pdurrrr and I am the head brewer and co-founder of Second City Meadery. We are in the process of raising capital to secure a location on Chicago's north side and as part of that we are starting a bottle club.

Here is a link for more information and to enter our club: https://secondcitymeadery.com/membership/

The short of it is:
  • Officially begins once we are open for business (Shooting for summer 2019)
  • $200 to join
  • First crack at all bottled releases for 12 months
  • Swag (glass, corkscrew, T-shirt)
  • 4 complimentary members-only bottles included
  • Quarterly members-only party
  • Proxies are allowed and your proxy is eligible to attend the members-only party if you cannot make it
  • Short term perks include monthly giveaways to members-only through a facebook group (or email for members who do not have a facebook account). We are hoping to get a free bottle into the hands of every member prior to opening our doors, but that is a tall order. We will do our best

Please do not hesitate to ask any questions here or in a private message

Cheers everyone, I look forward to sharing mead with all of you down the road

I am not allowed to join any more clubs because really my cellar needs to get smaller before it takes over my house, but I give Second City my meaningless seal of approval, if that means anythinf to anyone in here.

On an unrelated note, I am coming to Publican tonight vav.

I won a pdurrrr LIF earlier last month and I can confirm it's some of the best stuff I've had. 100% in for the membership and highly recommended.

I signed up, I’ve never had the pleasure of trying any Second City mead but enough people I know who have tried it give it rave reviews so I am inclined to spin the wheel.

What is the estimated trade value ratio to hazy IPAs for your FIBeetus honey wine?

Also, wish you lots of success!

I’m going to die of fullness. Thanks for making our evening out extra awesome!

this board gets criticized for gentle ball fondling of rev but i think the same can be said of off color. i think i've come down from this weekend (one where an off color employee started off my day in 95 degree heat with a wild turkey 101 shot) by drinkin almost a whole case of the zwickleish you never take me anywhere nice. and with this allagash collab coming, may the gentle fondling (which is consensual) continue.
