Totally hear you, and I'm not a huge fan of the transition from bottles to cans. Last year it was $20 for a 22oz bottle (.909 $ per oz) and this year it comes out to $40 for a 4pack/12oz of the Bourbon or $60 for a 6pack/12oz of x4 Bourbon / x2 Rum (.833 $ per oz) so it is actually cheaper on a per oz basis.

Sunday is the best day to come out honestly as leftovers will be on draft and there should be a non-existent crowd compared to Friday / Saturday.

Isn't that one of the draws of cans, the cheaper packaging costs? I think i'm just surprised at the price given that Pipeworks can pump out incredible barrel aged bottles, at a cheaper price per oz with the added burden of Cook County taxes and Chicago city labor, and it's available any time.

I will say I'd rather have Quiet Giant cans at its price point, than Mikerphone BA bottles at theirs, though.

While that might be true (cheaper packaging costs on canning) those savings aren't realized for a very long time based on the cost of the equipment. Also 7bbl brewery vs. 30bbl (think that is what Pipeworks is brewing on these days) makes for a different perspective based on economies of scale.

I'll be curious to see what the turnout for packaged sales is compared to the past couple of years.

Fair counterpoint on brewery size, but Pipeworks was charging the same price for BA Jones Dog that they do now, 4 years ago when they were on Wabansia, with a substantially smaller system

I'm not sure canning is much cheaper (considering most folks doin small BA run's were done by hand as opposed to a mobile canner or manual canner)...I tend to think the appeal of cans for BA beer is light protection and to me, 2-12oz is preferred over 1-22oz

Could you explain how canning runs by hand work?

I know Corridor was literally hand crowlering all of their 16oz Squeezeit cans. Does canning by hand work the same way?

They have crazy full automated machines, down to the old fashioned hand crank seamer (
(Link to media)
) to this thingy which is sorta on the lower end of automation but still manual -
(Link to media)
. I have no idea what they used but even this manual thing is probably 10 times more than a lower end 4-head bottler which you can make for like 400 or buy for like 1K. team middle brow is like on the 60% automated end where we need to manually feed a belt cans and then manually snap on the pakteks. Some folks buy the feed device, some folks buy the snap device. the majority of folks around here place a few phone calls and wait for scary guys with john wayne gacy as a clown tattoos to show up from outta state and mobily do it for you.

the old fashioned hand crank seamer
That would get old after the first six pack.

Got an extra to David Byrne at Auditorium Theater if any Chicago heads want to take in a rock and roll show tonight. Sweet seats, dead center 17th row. Only drawback is I'd be stinkin' up the seat next to ya. Don't need anything for the ticket.

Why oh why did i agree to take a shift tonight

Ha. The Coming of Gose and I had a delightful afternoon at the forge and whiskey acres. Rare in local public appearance by both of us.

We're gonna start a hype train for Forge's Heavy Hitter barleywine. Best BA barleywine I've had outside of Straight Jacket in a long time.

Gonna ask the owner when the next release is so I can advise him on how to create a hypeline.
