As overcrowded/oversaturated as the Chicago market may be, it's still a centrally located, very well connected (transportation-wise) major metropolitan area with almost 10 million people with a fairly large portion of those people into craft beer. Hence why Chicago is still a very desirable market. Breweries don't need to move a ton of product all that fast on Chicago shelves to be profitable or successful here. If every store that carries craft orders a few cases a month that's still a massive revenue stream.

I'm surprised to see so much backlash about Shorts coming to Chicago....at worst, it's just another solid option. Don't buy if you don't like. That's why I don't have a problem with "over saturation." The majority of us are wise enough to know what's worth trying / buying consistently.

It kind of sounds like they can't even keep up with demand in MI though. Why expand to other states/cities when you could keep your beer fresh and well stocked on MI shelves?

Anyone who may know, does Short's date their bottles?

Every time I'm in MI I pass aisles of dusty Short's bottles in just about every liquor store. I picked up some very outdated Huma on two separate occasions last year.

Their speciality beers are usually much better than the year rounds anyway. They could just send cup o Joe and I'd be happy....I believe they did start bottle dating. My brother brought some back in the fall and their was a date on mmmkay

Ahhhh...I don't get up to MI that often so I was just going off what MarcatGSB was saying in the other thread.
And if they don't bottle date, I have no reason to even bother with them when we have enough locals that consistently push out fresh, dated bottles/cans.

Not sure where you picked up info about them not keeping up.
I've never heard of anyone ever having an issue getting any Short's they want. They do turn around a lot of smaller batches. At one point last year seemed like every week there was a new Short's brew.
Pokemon.

Keeping stuff fresh (in MI) for year round stuff more likely to happen with this new situation. I'm okay with that. Prefer fresh Huma.

Right on. If I can find relatively fresh, dated stuff here, I look forward to trying more of them. I think I've only had Huma, and not even sure how fresh that was. I've been told I need to try their Mayan stout, whatever its called.

It's tough to get delivery trucks out to the forest MarcatGSB lives in.

Was talking to the brewer at Mikerphone Brewing earlier today at the Fieldworks bottle release. Told him to check out this place, so I hope you lot have said nice things about his beer's? Seemed like a good guy. His stuff sounds interesting.

I have personally really enjoyed Mikerphone's beers. I didn't expect much when I first tried them, but am now a big fan.. I think the future is bright for them with their brewery opening in Elk Grove.

I've only tried one, think it was Disco Superfly, it was really good. Not a fan of the 24oz can format, but it's still better than a bomber.

Cant wait for the Taproom to open. We need more breweries out here in the NW burbs, especially since this is 5 mins from work and 5 mins from my in-laws
He said he was on course for June opening. However his mate looked at him and raised his eyebrows when he put that date out there.

Seriously! I don't get why Arlington Heights or Schaumburg doesn't already have a well established brewery.

Uhh......there's Ram in Schaumburg, I don't know what else you would need.

On a more serious note....yeah, I'm surprised they don't have anything out that way. I can go 10, 15 minutes from my house and hit half a dozen breweries that I know of in the Downers Grove area and surrounding burbs.

Mike is about as nice and humble of a guy as you'll meet. I took a tour of the new space last week and it's going to be great. It's in an office park, very reminiscent of how most California breweries start out (Lost Abbey, Council, Noble, Bottle Logic, etc). There are so many cool ways that he'll be able to incorporate the music theme and his artwork into the vibe that it should be a unique place to hang out.

Daft Funk was one of the better beers I've had from a midwest brewery. Awesome Berliner aged in Orin Swift barrels.

However, the rest of the stuff has been hit or miss for me. Really liked Nature's Candy and Blue Hast Mich but a few others were less than stellar.

Either way, he's definitely earned a fan in me. I'll try 90% of his stuff at least once.

Love Mike's work and passion! He's brewing solid to great beer.

Protip: anything currently in a big ass can is at least 2 months old at this point. He'll only be releasing 750s for the moment while contracting out of Une Annee. Cans will return once he begins brewing in Elk Grove.

Also, Lyrical Gangsta (DIPA) is super fresh and tasting great.

This latest batch of PW Something Hoppy is much hazier than I remember. They just need to can this stuff and I can start posting ISOs for Cantillon and Vanilla Rye+

But how will people know it is good if we can't post pictures of lines outside the brewery release on Instagram?
