Highlights from Rev's latest email blast:
We are proud to reveal two additions to our packaged beer lineup this week: Gravedigger Billy, a bourbon barrel-aged wee heavy Scotch ale, in bombers, and Unsessionable, an imperial IPA loaded with six hop varieties, in cans. Both beers are now shipping out of our warehouse, so you should start seeing them on shelves near you soon.

Gravedigger Billy's release is the official kickoff to Revolution’s Deep Wood Series of barrel-aged beers available this fall and winter. Seven different Deep Wood beers will be released in bottles this year. The lineup will include a second new addition, Blue Gene, a blueberry porter also aged in bourbon barrels, coming out in December.

Unsessionable is an entirely different beast, and marks our very first high gravity beer released in a can. With a surprisingly dry and crisp finish, this is the most drinkable imperial IPA you'll likely ever have. Drink it fresh.

Deth's Tar, beer number 2 in our Deep Wood Series this year, is aged in bourbon barrels, and named after our exalted leader, Emperor Deth. This one is definitely on the dark side. We're aiming for a bottle release and draft release near the end of October.

Upcoming Beer Releases:

10/8: Adams' Best, a best bitter made with Irish malt, and Stuka Pils, a hoppy pilsner Jim brewed for our Oktoberfest party

10/15: Chicago Smoke, a seriously smoky lager that pairs excellently with food

10/22:Uncalled Four, barrel-aged 4th Year Beer Belgian quad

10/29: Penguin Hops and Deth's Tar (draft release)

I really liked Chicago Smoke last year. Will bang again this year.

Is Gravedigger Billy same price point as other Deep Wood Series? That is to say, about $5-$7 too expensive.

How many $8 barrel aged beers are you buying?

I just always found it a bit odd that their retail prices on these are essentially the same as bar prices. So I tend to just wait for SJ, the Genes, etc. to go on draft and enjoy them out with comparable hit to wallet.

You're right, there aren't many good BA beers at that price, but there are some. Which is why I'll save my money I'd spend on GB bottles and wait for Backwoods at $15 a 4 pack. Same for SJ and CW BBBW.

Straight Jacket is usually $7-$10 a snifter out here. I'll buy $15 barrel aged bombers from Rev all day.

They are a little over priced for only being aged in the barrel for 6 months and coming from a rather large craft brewery. That is if you take Firestone, Bells, Founders, Pipeworks and CW's BA offerings in to account. I'll pay 15 for a Straight Jacket and stock up at the brewery but the other ones are just not worth it.

Bells charges $22 for their 750s
FW: ~$17 when I last bought them
Founders BA Backstage 750s ~$18
Pipework's are bad

Unless we're talking about a different format which changes the argument altogether.

And I quite like Deth's Tar, Mean and Bean along with the best Barleywine in the whole ******* galaxy, Straight Jacket.

This reminds me to swing by a nearby Trader Joes to stock up some shelf turd Straightjacket. It's just been sitting there! For months!

I'm likely in the minority but I'd rather Boy Gene over Blue Gene. I wonder if they're doing both Bean and Mean Gene again. If so, that means Gravedigger Billy and Blue Gene are the only new bombers this year. The BA line-up looks to be Billy, Deth's Tsar, Very Mad Cow, Straightjacket & Blue/Bean/Mean Gene.

Speaking of shelf turds, how in the he'll is Half Acre not out of Anicca yet?

I like the whole series as well, and if we are just talking bombers, then yeah, I'm not singling out Rev. But I do think the format does have to start being part of the argument, when there are things like Backwoods, the entire CW BA series, and even regular BCS now that can be gotten in decent quantity at a far lower cost per oz.

And still, I think I'd generally prefer a snifter of SJ over a bomber, even from Rev. $8 for 10oz is a little less than $18 for 22oz. When there's that little discrepancy between retail and draft, I'll go with the latter. If Rev continues having no issue selling at these prices even as production expands, good for them. I'd do the same. More for you guys though.

I'll gladly pay 3 bucks more for another 6 months in the Barrel. Just think Rev should let them chill a bit longer for more Barrel flavor.

Pipework's are bad? The last BA Murderous was Fantastic, BA Jones Dog was great too. Reminded me of BCBS, then again BA jones dog was 10 bucks a 12oz.... Agree formats are a different game.

Come to think of it Rev doesn't really make a regular barelywine, you would think with the success of Straight Jacket they would bust one out in bombers every once in a while. Has anyone had Institutionalized? Do they release it on draft at the brewery still? I don't know for sure but seems with that name it could be the base beer for Straight Jacket.

And I'm trying my best not to be biased by that night I had the 3 pours of SJ at Temple Bar for $9. Gosh.

Institutionalized was just okay. I think with the success of Straightjacket they're playing it smart by putting most/all in barrels.

No, I'll give him that. BA Jones Dog was really, really tasty. But probably more like lightning in a bottle. When PW can release 4-packs of this beer and it tastes great year after year after year... well, then it's time to compare it to BCS.

Not srs.
I actually decided to pick this one up. I don't think I'll really like it but... I like trying things that different.

Once in a while, at least. This bottle will likely satisfy my 1 PW bottle/3-4 month ration I'm going with.

I didn't really like the base all that much. And priced somewhere around $15-17 (I'm assuming), no thanks.

I've tried drinking that beer on three occasions. Two times I got an infected green apple mess and the third time it was a mediocre at best beer. Unless everyone is getting magic bottles of this beer I don't see it being close to BCBS at all.
