R.I.P. Mean Gene Oklerland. We threw a 2015 Mean Gene on tap in his honor and are doing $20 crowlers (Taproom). It's tasty.

Add another one to the I tried it so you don't have to list. I had time to kill last Saturday and decided to check out a new brewery taproom in St. Charles. D&G Brewing is tucked back in a few block north of Rt 64 and a couple blocks west of Rt. 31. Shares a building with a sports academy. Gives off the vibe of an old school homebrewer that finally decided to go pro. A lot of classic styles that don't usually get brewed too much these days. It was fairly busy with some old timers holding court at the bar. I went through 4 tasters, and didn't feel the need to continue on.

Kolsch was on the sweeter side and not crisp enough for my tastes
Ordinary bitter was lacking in the malt/hop combo that a good bitter has
Denali IPA was old school midwest IPA all the way. Bitter, malty sweetness
Roasted Chocolate Oatmeal Stout was the best of the bunch. A solid beer that was right on style.

beeraficionado any word on variants for the SJ release? I’m doing a dry January but might have to allow a cheat day for the release.
We’re tasting through them and working on the descriptions. I’ll post hopefully by the end of this week. If you’ve been excited about past lineups, I dont think you’ll want to miss this one.

Beer Cellar opening a new spot in Geneva this summer. Much excite. Direct access to Afterthought in my own town. I figure I'll have a few months of Spring to up my bicycle stamina before they open. Can't wait.

On a different note, anybody else heading to pick up Clare's cans Saturday and go check out this FG challenge at Goose? We decided the FG challenge was the perfect reason to get our fantasy fb league together and exchange the trophy. Hope the weather is decent.

Cant wait for the Geneva location. Didnt see it mentioned in the FB post but does anyone know if it will have on-site consumption?

Congrats to both Karl and Marilee on finally opening Twisted Hippo and making their dream a reality. It's definitely been a longtime coming, even though I attended the F&F last week, I popped in yesterday for the official opening last evening and it was packed. Wish nothing but success to both them and the space, they did an amazing job...

FG Challenge filled before 10AM with 100 kickers. Can’t wait to watch this unfold. 2014 Prop on tap according to GI twitter as well. Hitting Haymarket and Cruz Blanca before heading there around 1PM kickoff.
I'll bet a few make it.

It’s a shame they couldn’t give away beer - but any NFL game next year is a decent prize. Any games in London scheduled for next year?

Nobody made it. About 10% nearly died from a fall. So not only did you have to kick a 43 yard field goal but you had to do it with a ten foot fence eight yards in front of you, in the snow, with the kicking surface covered in ice.
We saw one legit high enough and straight enough to be an extra point. Nobody got within 10 yards while we were there. Also the line at 1:15 to get into the taproom was a block long. We watched for 40 minutes or so then returned to Haymarket. 37 month indignant and coffee variants were quite tasty. The chocolate mint was incredibly minty. Hard pass.

Ha, so they opened in the Breakroom / Finch / never Ravinia space? I hope that they have better luck in that space. At least they make solid beer. Albany Park deserves a good brewpub.

Same space, but they also have the adjacent building as well for an event space. Complete overhaul on the interior, they put a lot of thought into everything. Beer line up is solid, a bit on the heavier side as far as the ABV, but nicely dialed in. Which I’ve found most places take a few months or so (minus BiXi), I remember when Rev first opened it took a while for everything to find a balance.

Definitely think they’ll find success, food is much better than either of their predecessors and it’s just a fun place to hang for a couple two tree. My only complaint are the pink camo pants the staff has to wear, but that’s about it. Also had no clue what Killer Queen was, but damn if that game isn’t addictive...

Resillence IPA & Pinky's Pieces in the glass, and every beer is $8 regardless of style, quantity, ABV.

Cheese curds with pickled peppers and a balsamic glaze that was pretty phenomenal, but was a prety small portion to share between two dudes.

Kobe (really?) beef corn dog with a jalapeno cornbread crust and fries. Was delicious, but I always thought true Kobe beef was absurdly expensive (and that Waygu was the reasonably priced American alternative).

My buddy Rick had the Jibarito with steak, which while good for brewery food, but wasn't anywhere near the quality of a good Jibarito in my opinion.

Also was annoyed that $12 / hour is considered a living wage (although if everyone is receiving health insurance that is pretty fantastic for the a new place in the service industry) per our server. I still left a cash tip of about 20%, but looking around I felt like we were the massive outlier in that respect.

Beer quality was good, but none of the 3 beers we had (Resillence, Pinky's, Cashmere / Marris Otter SMASH) was exceptional in any way. Space is very nice, and I really hope that the 3rd time is a charm for this location.

Lots of industry folks and locals hanging out on Saturday afternoon which I think bodes well for their future, and looking forward to checking them out again in about 6 months after they've worked out all their kinks.

A great and honest review and I couldn't agree with you more, did you try the beer cheese? I normally steer clear of things like that, but damn if I wouldn't bath in a bathtub full of that stuff. Our friend who did most of the art (the mural over by the kitchen pass) if painting a mural in our future tiny roommate's apartment, he did a great job on the bathroom wallpaper and glassware too...
