Getting ready to brew 3rd batch (soon). I did an american amber ale in the bucket to ferment 1st batch, but my second batch i put in carboy to ferment so i could see what was actually going on in that magical little container.

But I'm slightly concerned the aroma from the amber ale is going to bleed into the pale ale i am going to brew (soon)

Any ideas? i cleaned/scrubbed it out when I bottled. But as most plastics seem to do it still has a hint of ale? not that it is a bad thing but didn't want to have that taint the beer

thanks

I have this issue too, though from research it doesn't seem to cause any issues with getting into your new beer. I've done oxyclean (which apparently was the scented version), then I couldn't get that smell out of the bucket. I've tried baking soda too and that worked for the oxiclean smell, but not the skunky beer smell.

Soak or don't worry. The next batch will just chang the style of the odor.

Word to the soon-to-be wise... Don't "scrub" your plastic. It is almost impossible to do without scratching. Those tiny scratches can harbor bad bugs.

Peace.

Soak with OxyClean for a day or 2. It'll get rid of most of the odor although I don't think the odor will hurt anything.

really, i wouldnt bother with it. as long as you clean when you are done and clean+sanitize when you are going to use it again, that really faint ale smell will be completely overrun with the smell of your new beer.

really, think about it: you have a small amount of residual smell from a previous batch that is barely there. when you go to use it again, you are going to put about 5 gallons of new beer that has its own smell.

NEW BEAST OF A BEER FERMTENTING TO IT'S HEARTS CONTENT > residual waft of ale.

dont worry about it. it wont effect your new beer in any way.

Glad to hear it is nothing to worry about. Here in Singapore those buckets are about 60 dollars a piece. I was thinking about scrapping two and getting two more.

Thanks again!

I have spigots on all of my plastic fermenters. I remove them to clean, rinse & sanitize before re-installing wet with Starsan. Also clean & sanitize mounting hole. Then run Starsan through the fermenter & out the spigot right before filling with new wort. It gets rid of the residual smell. I use PBW for soaking clean.

I always clean my buckets immeditely after fermentation is complete; warm water and my hand. If there is a stubborn krausen ring I'll add some PBW and clean it again. The sides are brown and smell slightly of hops. Who cares. The inside of my engine compartment smells like gasoline and oil. I'm not gonna scrap it!!!

Soaking mine in PBW loosens it all up & most sinks to the bottom. White & shiny as new inside! Starsan rinse gets smells out right before filling.
