Always been that way; my Mom is worse (or better?). Tried OTC meds, NyQuil, Zzzz whatever quil, melatonin, and Ambien. I switch to a natural herbal remedy...I now wake up without being groggy...something I always struggled with.

I'll pop 1/2 a Xanax every 3 days or so. I can always fall asleep but it helps from that dreaded 3am wake up call.

Holding your breath with the herbal helps the remedy. Heard it from a friend.
