I'm the same as I was when I was 6 years old
And oh my God I feel so damn old
I don't really feel anything
On a plane, I can see the tiny lights below
And oh my God, they look so alone
Do they really feel anything?
Oh my God, I've gotta gotta gotta gotta move on
Where do you move when what you're moving from
Is yourself?
The universe works on a math equation
that never even ever really even ends in the end
Infinity spirals out creation
We're on the tip of its tongue, and it is saying
We ain't sure where you stand
You ain't machines and you ain't land
And the plants and the animals, they are linked
And the plants and the animals eat each other
Oh my God and oh my cat
I told my Dad what I need
Well I know what I have and want
But I don't know what I need
Well, he said, he said, he said, he said,
"Where we're going I'm dead."

Never Ending Math Equation - Modest Mouse

It is impossible to choose which MM lyric is better than another. Issac is a brilliant wordsmith. Here is just one of my MM favorites.

Walk to your house on my lunch break
Here it comes
Come inside and pour a drink
You'll probably tell me everything you think
Here it comes
The place and the time when we knew
everything could go wrong
The grass grows green
could you step away from the screen
it doesn't mean
I don't want you to be seen
just like everyone.
Grass grows green and it's just everyone.
You always told me life's a dam that breaks, well
Here it comes
If you sit still or if you run
Here it comes.
So now we're drownin' in birthday cakes
Here it comes
The place and the time when we knew everything could go wrong
Keep it clean.
I didn't mean to be mean.
Why does it always seem
Like I've never won.
Keep it clean and no one's ever won.
The empty promise makers said
Here it comes
Make a point to make no sense, well
Here it comes
Speak about the future in the past tense
Here it comes
Don't look down.
So what'd we do?
Here it comes
Walkin' around with **** on our shoes
Oh, here it comes
The place and the time that we knew things would go wrong.

For sure! :mug: I love them because of their lyrics, and vocals. I really can't even claim a favorite of their's, NEME came up in the Pandora shuffle, and I've always loved that one.

Speaking of great lyrics from another great alt rock group........

Apparently before Jed had left us
He wrotes some poems
Wrote them for no-one
But I guess I'll show them
Here's one of Jed's poems

You said I'd wake up dead drunk
Alone in the park
I called you a liar
But how right you were
Air conditioned TV, lend 20 grand
Walk to the bank
With shakes from the night before
Stare at the tiki floor
High school wedding ring
Keys are under the mats
Of all the houses here
But not the motels
I try to sing it funny like Beck
But it's bringing me down
Lower than ground
Beautiful ground
Beautiful ground

Test tones and failed clones
and odd parts made you

Jed's Other Poem (Beautiful Ground) - Grandaddy

Another one of my favorite alt bands popped up in the shuffle! :rockin:

Who can forget the classic:

"Now move your big ass 'round this way
so I can work on that zipper baby!"
-Prince (or the symbol or whatever)

He went to fight wars, for his country and his king
Of his honor and his glory, the people would sing
Oh what a lucky man he was
A bullet had found him, his blood ran as he cried
No money could save him, so he laid down and he died
Oh what a lucky man he was
ELP

Them that don't know him won't like him and them that do,
Sometimes won't know how to take him.
He ain't wrong, he's just different but his pride won't let him,
Do things to make you think he's right.

-Waylon & Willie

Every year is the same
And I feel it again,
I'm a loser - no chance to win.
Leaves start falling,
Come down is calling,
Loneliness starts sinking in.

But I'm one.
I am one.
And I can see
That this is me,
And I will be,
You'll all see
I'm the one.

Where do you get
Those blue blue jeans?
Faded patched secret so tight.
Where do you get
That walk oh so lean?
Your shoes and your shirts
All just right.
But I'm one etc.

I got a Gibson
Without a case
But I can't get that even tanned look on my face.
Ill fitting clothes
I blend in the crowd,
Fingers so clumsy
Voice too loud.

But I'm one.

The Who

I like the words to the whole song but the ending is a real kick in the balls to whoever he wrote the song to......

I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment
I could be you

Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is
To see you

Majesty
Faithful me
Pour yourself
Into me

Wield your power
Martyr's price
Stare me down
To the ground

The eyes of the devil
Fixed on his sinners

Slake my thirst
Eternal wealth
Heathen key
Round my neck

This poetry
Our blasphemy
Know the sounds
Of infamy

The hands of Satan
Assembling his flock
The pale horse rider
Searching the earth

Whispered conjuration
A belief takes form
Choking hand tapping
The veins in your throat

His orders in your mouth
A decree for domination
Beneath the tides of wisdom
Spins the undertow of hate

Injected seeds of vengeance
Usurper's eyes on the powerless
Clean path to his kingdom
Beckoning in the mist

The Grand Conjuration

Tell me why
Love subsides
In the light
Of your wish

Say my name
Ease the pain
Clear the smoke
In my head

The Grand Conjuration - Opeth

Get out in the field, put the mule in the stable
Ma she's a cookin', put the eats on the table
Hates in the city and my loves in the meadow
Hands on the plow and my feets in the ghetto

Stand up, sit down, don't do nothing
Ain't no good when boss man's stuffin it
Down there throats with paper notes
As babies cry when you're rockin the streets

I was the last child
Just a punk in the streets

Aerosmith - Last Child

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown,
The dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.

A little blue but I love it.

"The most tender place in my heart is for strangers,
I know it's unkind but my own blood is much too dangerous"

Neko Case, "Hold On, Hold On"

King Crimson - Epitaph

Between the iron gates of fate,
The seeds of time were sown,
And watered by the deeds of those
Who know and who are known;
Knowledge is a deadly friend
When no one sets the rules.
The fate of all mankind I see
Is in the hands of fools.

How long
Is the pattern going to speak for you
How far can your voice reach
Your song below the night
From my view
I can see you
Shudder where you are standing
In the vision
Cyan blue

Now
October
This time you won't be needing me
To run along the freeway
To weigh one's heart against the oncoming dark
You left me with the pills
We had plans but you couldn't make it
Through the trees
What took you so long
The high grass
What took you so long

Translate the fire
The venom's rush inside your heart
How long can winter
Colour your every word
And the skyline
Past the houses and the cities
Hyperopia
Carmine red

Now
This river
This time I will

Run along the freeway
To weigh one's heart against the oncoming dark
You left me with the pills
We had plans but you couldn't make it
Through the trees
What took you so long
The high grass
What took you so long

Lethean - Katatonia

Last year, this time, wasn't no joke,
My whole barn went up in smoke.
My horse Jethro, well he went mad
i can't ever remember things bein' that bad.
And here comes a man with a paper in his hand
Tellin' us our hard times are about to end.
And then, if they don't give us what we like
He said, "men, that's when you gotta go on strike."

Pretty eloquent picture of despair by The Band.
