last night my dog couldnt open her jaw but a hlaf inch. i google & figured it was a degerative disorder that many big dogs of her breeds gets. NOPE! she had a tumor on her jaw muscles. the vet says he only seen 6 in his 20 years. gave her recovery if i went for kemo, surgery, etc etc 40%. So she gonna have her final weekend at my parent house chasing rabbits & birds then on monday she gonna get put to sleep. I was crying like a girl all upset at the vets, she came over to see if i was allright. fellas I've had family dogs before but this is my first dog. this is the hardest thing i have to do. But she not in pain. my mom is cutting up food for her real small so she can eat, she can still drink. So fellas please have a drink in memory of INTEGRA.

It's never easy, but you're doing the kindest thing for her.

[glass raised to both of you]

My boyhood friend Onyx (black cocker spaniel) was put to sleep after one more day at the ocean chasing sea gulls...

I am drinking a flat Oatmeal stout in honor of monty (only bottled yesterday).

peace man. Sorry about your loss

Monty,

I'm sorry to hear the news about the pooch. That sucks! My dad is a vet in WA, and I've been on both spectrums, and I tell you this, I only wish that our medical profession would respect those wishes for us humans. Look, you are giving her a hell of time, she loves you and vice versa, what you are doing is respecting her. It's a tough decision. no doubt about it. but ****, I wish someone would do that for me if I'm ever in that situation.

I can tell you behind the curtains, that animals are put down in the upmost respect. I've been there....

I honestly wish you the best of luck.

I am telling my Doberman ISIS all about your friend Integra.
We will share a beer. Mine in a glass, hers in a cold stainless bowl.

She likes IPA's BTW.
Tonight we will both enjoy each others company, as a tribute to all our furry and fuzzy friends.

Well, I was about to go to bed, but I'll have another for Integra.

It's a wrench to go though this stuff. I hope she has a great weekend.

You are doing the right thing. She will love you and love the time that she has to play this weekend. I'd hoist a pint, but it's now Saturday morning and I have chores to do yet. I'll lift one up in a bit when I hopefully bottle that beer for a friend.

Been through this myself. Our first bulldog was not even 2 when we put him down. The vet gave us the invasive surgery, then chemo route, or we could put him down. We kept him with us for 5 more happy months. He was extremely sick in the end and it was the most gut wrenching decision to ever make but we knew it was time and I think he did too. I cried like a baby. Didn't care who saw. I loved that dog.

Hoisting one to you and yours tonight. You won't ever forget but you will grow with it in the end. Remember the good times. The stupid times when they made you smile. Even the angry times when they made you mad. Dogs have an uncanny ability of taking up a place in our hearts that only a dog can. They are a joy and a curse all at once. Don't harden your heart after this. Someday you will feel back to normal. Then you can invite another silly canine in to start the process all over.

On a side note since putting our first down I am all about rescue dogs. Rescued our bulldog a year and a half ago. Easiest way to make a dogs life better.

I don't even know you and I almost just shed a tear. I feel for you amigo and all I can say is that you are doing the right thing. There is nothing worse than not knowing if she is upset or not. Take a month and get a puppy. It will help immensely and you will realize the similarities and start getting some reincarnation feelings. I will drink one for you guys!

Will have one for Integra when I get off work. I know it's hard but it is the ultimate gift we can give them. I cry as much as SWMBO when we have to do it. May the pain be brief and the good memories of her forever.

Feb. 28, 2009, my chocolate lab Buck, of 14 years had to be put down. That was the longest drive of my life. I was very embarrassed, however I still cried like a baby. Best dog ever and he will not be replaced. It was that hard. Matter of fact, I'm choked up now so I will have several beers to your loving pet. Maybe she'll find Buck and they will play together. He loved sticks and heavy rocks.

Didn't see this thread until just now. I feel for you. I really think it's harder to lose a dog than a relative. I'm going to the kegerator to pull a pint of bock in memory of Integra right now. That's an awesome name for a dog, BTW.

I feel your pain brother and I hope you get through this tough time. We recently got a new mini-doxie puppy and had her for only 9 days. One night we came home and she was hyperventilating. She had a genetic defect and had an EXTREMELY enlarged heart. After a trip to the emergency vet at 2am we had to put her down too. Surgery and a specialist would have been over 3k and there was no guarantees of prolonged life.

I just wanted to thank everyone four the out pouring of emotion. I posted this mainly trying to deal with the pain. Like many other home brewers my dog used to watch what i was doing. Every batch though some how a hair or two always got in it. But that was integra her hair would get everywhere even the upper cabinets in the house. I'll probally formulate a brew in memory of her. For an update I;m going to my parents house. I;m going to dig her grave. Monday i have to schedule her in for her passing. I might even call a mobile vet to do it at the house. I have friends coming over to say their last goodbye.

thank you all again

I'm so sorry for your loss, I raise my glass to you both. I've recently lost both a pet and a relative, so I share your pain. A memorial beer is a wonderful idea, I decided to do the same but, not being very good at this, I'm still a long way off!

Glad to hear your friends are there to help you through this.

I might even call a mobile vet to do it at the house.

That really depends solely on the cost because you'll be with her at the end either way and she won't know the difference. She may even enjoy the final car ride. Your call.

Sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry to hear. It's probably one of the toughtest things we ever have to go through. I will, albeit sadly, have a drink for your pup. I got this in a chainmail a while back.... gets me every time:

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owner, his wife, and their little boy were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, the owners told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old boy to observe the procedure. They felt he could learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. The little boy seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.

Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion.

We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.

The little boy, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, "Everybody is born so that they can learn how to live a good life - like loving everybody and being nice, right?" The four-year- old continued, "Well, animals already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

Did you ever consider having her cremated? I had my first Golden Retriever, Copper, cremated. She was my hunting partner and though I grew up with dogs she was the first one that was "my dog". As I said she was my hunting partner- she was a helluva pheasant dog. And she was my best friend. When she got cancer and had to be put down I had her cremated. This sounds kinda weird, but I had this brownie tin with a Terry Redlin print on the cover. It's a print of a hunter sitting on a hill overlooking a marsh with his dog sitting next to him as the sun is coming up. I'm looking at it now and it is bringing tears to my eyes as I type, remembering that dog. Anyway, I put her ashes in that tin and I keep it, along with her collar and choker, in my gun cabinet. I take it out every once in a while and look at it and remember my friend. She'll never leave me. Anyway, it's just a thought.

My heart goes out to you.

I buried my best friend about 3 years ago, and even though I have two new pups laying asleep at my feet, my heart still aches for my Bo.

I was there when Bo was born, and never spent much time apart from him.

Digging Bo's grave, and returning him to the earth is the only work I have ever done on a Sunday that wasn't job related, or a have to case for the farm I live on.

Its so crazy how we get attached to pets. I don't know exactly how you feel, but I have been in the situtation, and it sucks.

I raise my IIPA to you & for all the friends that are no longer with us.
