I just bought a Brewer's Best Dunkelweizen kit .I have used these kits before and they are easy and allow me to try different styles of beer, but I haven't tried the Dunkelweizen. I did have what I believe was Dunkelweizen a few years back but it was my birthday and I was not drinking to enrich my brewing knowledge that night. I was wondering what kinds of flavors I might expect with these ingredients. Fermentables 6.6 lb wheat LME, 1lb Maltodextrin.
Specialty Grains 8oz. Chocolate, 8oz Munich
Hops 5oz Hersbrucker, 5oz. Hallertau.
Yeast says Munich/Danstar
The kit just says sweet and bready. Is there a Dunkelweizen lover out there who can tell me more? :mug:

Dunkelweizens are like chocolatey hefeweizens. They are very yeast driven so you might try swapping that for some liquid yeast like wlp300 or something similar.

yup. think of it like a brown hefe. dark but not black and yeasty- just like a hefe.

a dunkel is basically a darker, sweeter, maltier, lightly chocolate-y hefe. you should be able to find Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel or Ayinger Ur-Weisse if you want to try great examples of the style

as far as the recipe, i would get a better yeast (aforementioned 300 is good, I prefer 380 for less banana) and ditch the malto-dextrin (completely unnecessary). also, i really hope you mean 0.5oz of each of those hops, 5oz apiece would be way too much.
