I've read a lot on here about how to get the proper head on your beer when you pour it or how much to leave in the bottle when pouring your beer. Nowhere have I read about drinking straight from the bottle. Is this just not done with a homebrew?
 
Not unless you like a mouth full of yeast, unless you have a beer gun, in which case go ahead... I'll stick to using a glass though.
 
If you want to drink the sediment, then go for it. I prefer not to have chunky beers...but it really depends on how much you have at the bottom. When I rack to my bottling bucket, I leave most of the yeast behind, so it only leaves me with a very thin layer at the bottom. It's fine to drink, and has plenty of vitamin B, but why would you want to? Plus, drinking out of a glass shows off the beer much more.
 
I've had beers which I don't like in a bottle, transform into something I like when in a glass. Particularly true with IPA's. I also don't like yeast sludge.
 
The reason I ask, is because if I'm going out on, say a boat, I don't want to be carrying a glass around with me.

fyi ... my swmbo loves those cold coffee drinks from starbucks and those plastic cups are dishwasher safe (top shelf) ... I use those cups when I want to take my homebrew out where a glass would be a bad idea .. like poolside .. i actually really dont mind drinking beer out of them at all either .. waaaaaay better than athe bottle IMO ... it's not glass, but you do still get to see the beer .. cheers :mug:
 
What is done is all about YOUR preference.

As for mine, I drink from he bottle when it suits me. There is benifit to pouring into a glass to maximize heading, aroma, and even flavor.

But, at the end of the day drinking from a bottle does not make the beer any less enjoyable if you forgoe the mundacity of perfecting the pour, paring the proper glass, serving at the precise temperature, and raising a pinky......
 
I actually had one of mine from a bottle the other day. It was an apa done with nottingham then left in the fridge on accident for several months. I had given it to a friend and he never drank it and he's the type todrink straight from the bottle. So when I asked for a beer that's what I was handed. The sediment on the bottom was so tightly packed it never even moved. Other than that specific time I've always had it from a glass, other not so flocculant yeasts never pack that tightly.
 
Keg the brew, carbonate with CO2 (not priming sugar) and then drink from whatever you like...

I'm using 2.5 and 3 gallon kegs for my brews, which are easy to carry around. You can get small CO2 tanks (2.5# in regular regulator connection, 20oz for pinvalve) so it's even more portable. Rig up a cooler to hold the keg and gas system and you're even better off. All depends on how much time you have before going on the boat, and what you're willing to do to get great tasting brew...

BTW, if I let mine go for more than a week, or two, in the fridge, the sediment compacts real tight. I just prefer to go to glass so that I can SEE the bubbles, the head, and enjoy it more. No pinky lifting on this side though.
 
I drink my brews out of the bottle all the time when I'm away from home. Even with mediocre bottling techniques the amount of yeast sediment is minimal except for beers that you would want the sediment mixed for flavor (wheat beers). Don't over think it, just enjoy the fruits of your labor.

So you give him a beer, he sticks it in the fridge and never touches it. You come over and ask for a beer and he gives YOU your beer. Sounds like he didnt trust your homebrew, what a jerk!
 
I also enjoy when people don't drink the beers I gift them. It makes me feel really good, and want to give them even more free beer.
 
I drink straight from the bottle on occasion. Of course you don't get the aroma from pouring it into a glass. You also get more yeast then normal but hey, it is very healthy and it helps get the train out of the station if you know what I mean.

I really lack friends that like beer. This just happens to be a friend so I give him a bottle every once and a while. He also happens to be a diabetic and I have no idea how hes managing it so maybe a beer is beyond his limit. This guy invites me over for dinner like twice a month so I'm pretty sure he just either doesn't like beer at all and is too nice to say something or can't drink it.

I was thinking about just giving him beer to age in his fridge since I can't seem to keep my hands off them.
 
I have noticed that nottingham is tight too. The key is in the way you drink it. I prefer mine in a glass as I like some good head, and the aroma. Plus, I find lacing exciting. I think more so now than when I didn't brew.
 
Thanks for the input guys. I was just wondering why it seemed everybody talked about pouring their beer in a glass. As a noob to the homebrew scene, as far as the sediment goes, I couldn't see an advantage of drinking it out of a glass over directly from the bottle. Either way you're going to disturb it when you tip the bottle to pour it or drink it.

As a noob to the homebrew scene, as far as the sediment goes, I couldn't see an advantage of drinking it out of a glass over directly from the bottle. Either way you're going to disturb it when you tip the bottle to pour it or drink it.

if you pour slowly and don't pour every last oz out, you will leave most of the yeast behind in the bottle.


if you want to drink homebrew from a bottle, you need to bottle finished beer off a keg. then it's ready to drink straight out of the bottle.
 
I'm pretty indifferent between a glass or a bottle. I force carb everything and bottle with a beer gun.

I remember the days when I cared what friends thought of my beer. Now the only people I want to impress are competition judges.

This exact thing is noted by me as well, Notty is such a crazy floccer (try to get away with saying that in mixed company/around non-homebrewers!) that my APA pours perfectly clear regardless of how careful you are, especially when it's chilled.
 
Until now I have always poured my homebrew into a glass, but I have this batch of BeerMakers XXX Bitter, I found that the yeast is minimal and tight at the bottom after chilling, ...and I find these bottles pleasing to drink from.

99% of the beer I drink benefits from a glass:mug:
 
I don't drink any beer from a bottle anymore. It severely impedes the flavor, aroma, and mouthfeel. I suppose if you're drinking just to get drunk the bottle works fine, but there is so much more to beer than intoxication. For me, drinking from the bottle would be like tossing my dinner in a blender and gulping it down. But, to each his own.
 
i'm with you tagz. drinking out of the bottle eliminates enjoying 2 of my favorite characteristics of beer...how it looks and how it smells. the only time i don't bother pouring into a glass is when poor planning leads to my holding a can of some pee water that likely came out of a 30 pack. Any beer worth drinking is worth pouring into a glass. (or at least a plastic cup if broken glass is too risky. which is what i do poolside or while tailgating)
 
drink the beer out of whatever makes you happy. cough cough eac cough, sorry tickly throat.

kiddie pool
kleenex box
hands that are cupped together
belly button(less hairy = better)
a duck
plastic bag(beware the choking hazard)
wicker basket
hollow stump
boot
old hydrogen peroxide bottle
nalgene
long length of tubing
one of those holy water containers
ice cube tray
wooden bowl
large spoon
daffodill flower
nicely shaped rock
who cares, it's delicious beer, just get it into your belly. you do not need to ALWAYS drink out of a pint glass (most common pint shape are shaped wrong for many styles of beer anyway, just sayin')

it still tastes great out of a bottle and consider the yeasty bit your hangover preventor, it is!
