Greetings from London!!

I'm a newb. Started my first kit about a week ago and had a very vigerouse few days of fermentation. It settled down now but due to the vigerouse fermentation, krausen has gotten on to and dried on the outside ridge of the lid (the bit you grip your fingers to when lifting off the lid). Should I leave it there? or is it ok to lift off the lid to wash, but then leaving my beer exposed??

Thanks. Happy brewing!!

yep, leave it until your beer is out of the fermenter. Feel free to clean the outside if you like.

some PBW or oxy will make easy work of the dried krausen when you're done.

I have always cleaned off the outside of the fermenter when this happens. I don't want it to get moldy, which could contaminate the beer. Do be careful cleaning it. If the krausen got out, pressure water can get in. I just use a paper towel and warm water, followed by starsan.

Thanks guys. Also another question...

Hydrometer sticking to side. I spin it and leave it and spin it etc. but it just leans against the tube. Suggestions?

Thanks

The actual middle of the hydrometer wouldn't really. I'm assuming your talking about the bulb at the bottom. That's not a big deal your measuring the gravity or density of the beer, Depending on how much sugars are left. So it doesn't matter if it's touching the sides just how buoyant it is (ie how much it floats) touching the sides won't effect that.

I'm just talking about the neck of the hydrometer where the scale is. Yeah the bulb is fine but if the neck is leaning obviously I'm gonna get an inaccurate reading.
