I live in the northwest and surrounded by good microbrews and craft brews and just started brewing myself anyways it seems alot of the microbreweries have a double IPA. What is this? Besides delicious and does anybody know a good recipe? Keep in mind I am extract brewing
 
Other than delicious, what does it need to be? There is some room for play in the style. I would recommend that you look at the recipe section of this forum. There are plenty of recipes with feedback to guage if it is for you.
 
It's basically just a showcase for hops. They have higher alcohol and hop bittering and aroma than a regular IPA. But like jerryboy said, there is a lot of room for creativity in the style. Some, like DFH 90 minute and Great Divide Titan have a pretty strong malt backbone, while others like Odell Myrcenary and Stone Ruination are a punch of straight hops to the face. If you can find a somewhat widely available commercial example that you really like, you can probably find a clone recipe of it somewhere on the internet and either brew that as-is or make some slight modifications to fit your tastes.
 
My first brew was the True Brew Double IPA kit, supposedly a clone of the DFH 90 min.

It came out great, tasted it side-by-side with the DFH and it was very close, according to my taste buds.

I tried to build a recipe at my LHBS but found many of the needed hops are hard to find this time of year. Thats why he recommended the pre-made kits since they had the hops already inside, if I was set on brewing a recipe that specific...
