Since this thread needs a little life…

Posted a pic of him at same beach a little bit ago, but took him out again this morning. After 30 minutes or so I wade into the water after throwing the ball as I’m very certain he would drown without realizing how tired he is from getting this ball. He is relentless.

I posted this in another thread a while back but figured why not here too!

Our Wheaton Terrier/ Standard Poodle mix her royal highness Chantilly.

Two years ago today we were in Hondo TX. To pick up this little one. 3550 mile round trip from Pennsylvania. She fit right in with our two other rescue family members. She is the class clown of the pack. 4 days on the road and worth every minute and mile to get her. She is our second family member from the same rescue in Texas.

Grog's Public Service Announcement™

PLEASE keep up with your heartworm preventative, you do NOT WANT your dog going thru treatment to get rid of them

our Gemma is still a foster until she is done with the treatment. We got her late November, had to wait for her to be spayed before we could continue with the h/w treatment & it is BRUTAL, for us, but more for her

she had to have several shots, a month apart, the 2nd time being 2 shots. stay overnight at the vet's for observation. then, between treatments, she has to be kept calm. IMPOSSIBLE to do with a bouncy bundle of energy we all know a 3yo dog is.

we've got a mild sedative for her, but it's not very effective.

she has another appointment (no shot! just a checkup) on the 24th, another 30 days calm, then we can adopt

Wow that reminds me of our old buried vizsla, Marlee. Make the most of these days. You'll miss him.

Here's our replacement. Daisy, taking a selfie while watching the hockey game (bolts/leafs) with my wife on Thursday (I was at the game :) )

We have determined our Lady Gemma cannot take a bad photo.

forgot to mention; we signed the adoption papers, she's OURS!

took her for a checkup to our regular vet, who said, in her professional & unbiased opinion "[Gemma] is perfect!"

Awesome, always makes my day better knowing a pup found a home 🤙🏻

the BigHair's super power: finding the sweetest dogs in the universe

Gemma is our 4th rescue beagle & just as sweet & loving as the other 3
Beagles are wonderful dogs, extremely kind dogs.Bless you all, hope many happy healthy years 🙌🏻

thank you. #1, Priscilla & #3, Howdy both lived to their teens & we spoiled them rotten

Goombah was only 5 when he developed kidney & liver problems, stopped eating & we had to put him down. he was a very handsome & sweet dog, but not incredibly bright. the BigHair called him "the Brad Pitt of beagles"

it was the first time I'd ever seen a vet cry when putting a dog down & that endeared us to her. granted, I haven't had many dogs put down, maybe I just never noticed in my own grief.

2 years after we got Howdy - coincidentally about how long we had Goombah, & also next week it will have been 10 years - he must have slipped or jumped, landed wrong & hurt his back pretty badly. local neuro vet wanted too much $ to fix him, so we started making arrangements to have him put down

until our vet recommended taking him to the Virginia Tech vet school, where they could do the surgery for much less $ & we drove overnight to get him there.

we cannot express in words the gratitude we have for this wonderful veterinarian, who is now our "primary care vet" & to the vets, nurses, techs & students at VA Tech's Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine

which brings us to my PSA: if you can't afford treatment for your pets at a regular or specialist vet, check local colleges for a veterinarian school. not only saves you money, but it will help train & teach the next generation of vets. yes, students will be working on your pet, but under strict supervision by actual vets.

Gemma's first encounter with a lightning bug (yes, I'm from Ohio. also Polish, so yes... I bowl)

It was hovering right in front of her & she was sniffing it when its ass lit up.

After the initial surprise, she wanted nothing to do with it

Daisy caught (killed) a little possum a couple of weeks ago. Yesterday, she was making a funny sound in the backyard and there was a gator just outside my fence, in my neighbors yard. Caught a quick video of it running away. There's a little creek that runs behind my yard, behind those bushes there.

Hunting dogs haha. If you turn up the audio, you can hear her squealing to get at that gator.

Growing up in South Georgia, know all about them gators! Last summer I was trying to help my nephew in law catch one on his pond. My friends here in Oregon thought I was kidding until I sent photos of the gator toying with us in the pond.

That's exactly what I worry about--obituaries.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's awesome to work it out one way or the other, pay respects to. I've lost five pets over the years so I understand.
But I am sometimes afraid I'll get another's heart-wrenching story and be sad for the lost pup and family for two days.
Not great when I see squirrel bite it either.

My wife showed me a video last night of a man jumping into a pond to rescue his pup from a medium size gator... it was already underwater when he jumped in and wrestled it from the gators jaws. SCARY!

I have a Brittany (also Daisy), she loves to poke her nose at anything in the yard. Just a couple weeks ago she was greeting a opossum that was on the fence. The critter did not know what to think when she stuck her nose on its behind 🤣

photo below was after the ball rolled away from her, this dog can give some serious side-eye and disapproving looks.

The downside of having hunting dogs is that they don't ever turn it off. For example, 1am, you take Daisy out for a quick pee and next thing you know you've got carnage in the back yard, then: headlamp, shovel, chase dog around because nothing's funner than keepaway with a wrecked possum, heave another dead animal into creek behind house. Rodent cemetary back there.
