Hello,
Today is May 1, and I finally got to put my rhizomes in the ground -- it's been really cold and rainy. I planted them at the base of my deck, and the deck railing is about 11' from the ground. Do you think I need to build a trellis for additional height this first year, or will 11' be enough given the lateness of planting?

I was originally aiming to add an additional 9'-10' of height, but that was when I thought I could get the rhizomes in the ground by early April.

Here's an older picture of where they are planted, from before I prepared the ground:

Plenty of room to grow, they will have horizontal room if they reach the railing so that should be fine. I was at 10' last year with my 1st year hops and they barely made it to the top of the post. This year I'm putting an extension up.

Does that spot get enough direct sun?

For the bulk of the growing season that spot gets direct light from about 8-3. Might not be ideal, but I think it'll be okay. It's really about the only place I can put hops, so it'll have to do.

And thanks for the replies. I think I'll skip the extensions this year. Gives me a whole year to plan, build, and secure them. :mug:
