diluting cider with water

We made a raspberry cider. I tried it tonight and it was very tart. I added about 12 oz if water to the 2 gallon batch to dilute that taste. Was this an ok move?
 
Was it still gassy? If it had a lot of CO2 gas still in it because its young you could get a sharp taste. If its finished fermenting and its to sharp adding a little sugar back and stablizing it might help instead of diluting it. What was your recipe? WVMJ
