The recipe OG is 1074. What was the grav of the 1st gallon of run off?

Can I make an unpopular confession?

I never take preboil gravities. It's been so long since I've missed a gravity by more than a point or two that I just don't worry about it.

This weekend was no different - once I adjusted for temperature, I nailed 1.074 on the nose.

I do this regularly for my Special Bitter. Pulling out the first gallon of running and reduce it down to a syrup, getting that like caramel flavor back into the beer. I suppose you could get that by doing a 120 minute boil but I like the results of doing this.
