Went to grab a one year old frigidaire i saw on craigslist for $200 bucks - listed as 19 cu ft. Got there and it was 9 cu ft or less with a prominent dent in the side. Offered the guy $140 since it would still fit the kegerator project needs. He countered with $175. Wrong size, damaged, high price. I left.

Still trying.

Yeah that doesn't sound like a very good deal. Good job walking away...

Yeah, some people talk about "oh just go on craigslist and get like 50 free fridges and freezers all the time for everything," but all of the NJ craigslist subsites *suck* for either one. Eventually I just caved in and bought something new, because the CL prices were ridiculous and I was spending months reading spam and scam stuff between real listings.

+1.. Ive seen lots of posts about all the free fridges/freezers... like they are piling up on the roadside or something.

I just tried to find one for about a month.. checking every few days. Ended up with a new one at the orange devil (home depot)... 7 cubic foot for under two hondo... I was sick of seeing people selling their 4 y/o freezers for 20 bucks less than they paid new.. riiiipppp ooffff.

Imnop - it's true - the Jersey listings are ridiculously bad.

So the great thing is, the guy emails me yesterday afternoon to say that he called Sears to verify the size. And what do you know - I was right - 9 cu ft. He said I could have it for $150.

Told him that with gas and the time it took me to get there, I'd need it for $120.

Gotta maintain the principles!

I have never understood why used little fridges are about the same price as used full sized?

I see used full sized on CL for $100 - 200.

The deals are there but it is extremely frustrating work. I got a large top freezer, bottom fridge unit that looks almost brand new for $80. A couple years ago I got an old upright freezer for $20 and it worked for two years. Of course there's nothing wrong with paying a couple hundred more for warranty and no CL exposure.

The CL deals are there to be had, but they are usually never there when you want them. I was lucky that I just happened to check into refrigerators one day last summer and a guy about 20 miles from me had a posting for a "free fridge" on the corner. First one to come get it can have it. I simply asked what color it was (because if it's gold or brown you know it's really old) and if it worked well. He said it was white and worked great and less than 6 years old. I flew up there and grabbed it. Not only was it in great shape, but it also worked great.

I didn't really need it at the time, but couldn't pass it up. If I really needed one right now I would never find that deal again. Just keep looking and don't give in on price.

I think it depends on where you live. Here we have at least 5 free fridge/freezers listed a week. Seems that chest freezers are never free though which is what I am looking for. It also seems like people don't sell chest freezers in the middle of winter.

Same thing can be said for Nashville. I tried for several weeks to get a chest freezer, but stuff was in the 150-200 dollar range for ancient chest freezers. I cracked and got one from Lowes when it was on sale for 170 with free delivery. Wish I would have just gone that route to begin with...

i got lucky. within 2 weeks or so, i found a 15 cf fridge for $100 with new seals and gaskets, but then again, i am in dallas-fort worth. this guy rebuilt apartments after people tore them up, and on the side, he rebuilt the old fridges

this one's 15 cf - probably not as new as the on you found. but i plan to encase it entirely so i'm not concerned with a few dings.

Thats the exact freezer I bought off of CL for $120 (of course the one I bought looks a little less "used" than the one in your pic.)

I added a 2x6" collar and found that there was just enough cord for the light on the lid to work without having to splice/change the length of the cord that powers the light.

Good find and I hope it works out for you!

You have to be fast and patient. Read every day, more then once a day, and pounce when you see what you want. All Craigslist are like that, nothing free or cheap lasts long at all. I got a good condition 15 cube for $75 after 2 months of looking every day, and it was worth every penny.
