I was just throwing out the box my chiller came in when I found a piece of paper stuck under the flap. It was first time cleaning instructions. DUH. Due to the oil on the copper you need to clean it first. I just washed it with warm water and sanitized it for 25 minutes in Star Sans. Then, you add it to the boil the last 15 minutes so the boil sanitizes it.
I sure hope it doesn’t affect the taste. The hydrometer test tasted awesome. And, it doesn't look like it affected the fermentation because it started within 8 hours and that was Sunday and it's still fermenting but slower.

It's suggested to us TSP or TSP/90.....anyone suggest anything else?

if you already brewed with it, you can probably disregard the initial cleaning instructions now. whatever was on it, if anything, is now in the beer. i wouldnt be too worried about it, starsan and hot water should have removed most of it first anyway.

Hmmm, just used my new immersion chiller for the first time, this past Sunday. I sadly didn't even think about anything like that, just threw it in, the last 15 minutes of boil. We'll see, i guess.

Fingers crossed!

I'll still clean it but I'm not sure with what.

Looks like it's been discussed here before...

I drilled my mash tun with oil for the bit and wiped it out afterwards intending to clean it later. I didn't and brewed with it and realized it halfway through the boil when I saw an oil sheen on top. Down the drain it went. When I intend to do something later, it most likely won't get done, especially cleaning. I'm never going to WANT to do it...

I don't recall seeing any kind of sheen on my brew....in the kettle or in the test jar so maybe I'm good.
It's a big, black IPA so I hope it can hide any possible off flavors. Smells awesome while fermenting. Like baked bread!

but for the future I find it best to scrub off the chiller when you finish brewing so it's nice and clean for the next batch. I scrub mine with a scotch bright pad and bar keepers friend.

Mine didn't come with a box, hence no cleaning instructions. I can't remember if I did anything. I may have dropped it into boiling water to test it but that was it. And I might not of.

I never really clean mine. I just hit with the hose to clear off any hop gunk and that's about it.

Maybe I am just paranoid guy, but I always wash the crap out of anything that will be in contact with anything I plan on eating or drinking. That includes any of my brewing gear.
