I have a 70qt cooler mlt that I have only used for 6 gallon batches. I am curious how much grain I can put in and still have room to sparge.

I typically brew 1.060 brews and get about 65% efficiency from my copper manifold.

If your infusion water is 1 qt/lb of grain it will occupy 42 fluid oz times the total grain used. If your infusion is 1.5 qt/lb then the volume is 58 floz. So multiply your infusion rate times the total grain poundage used to arrive at the approx. volume in your MLT. For example, if your rate is 1.5 qt/lb and you have a total grain bill of 20 lbs then
Vol = 58 X 20 = 1160 floz = 36.25 qts = 9.06 gal

I believe you can mash up to 40 or 42 lbs in this cooler.

I use this same cooler and that's what I figured would be my max. So far the largest grain bill I've had has been around 32lbs and had plenty of room left. I usually go for about 1.25qt/lb ratio.

My MLT is a 60 qt cube and I do mostly 11 gallon batches now. My last batch had 34 lbs of grain with 1.25 qt/lb of water and it was a tight fit. My guess is you will be able to do about 1.10 OG beers in 10 gallon batches before maxing out.
