I have used some spices that continue to have a scent inside the 5 gallon bucket. I was thinking about soaking the fermenter with a capful of bleach. Is that ok? Or, is there a better way to clean the bucket?

I have good success with PBW, OxyClean Free, and if that doesn't work I have used lemon halves wiped on the inside and rinsed to remove odors. OxyClean does work wonders with hat water.

I got some frosting buckets from a local store. I soaked them with OxiClean Free for a day. I then rinsed them out. They've been sitting around dry for about a week now and when I stick my head in the bucket I don't smell any frosting odor or anything else. I haven't tried bleach.

Bleach is your friend. People have used it for years. It does what it's supposed to do. You can use a stronger strength than a single capful if you like. To be honest, I never measure with bleach, just eyeball it. I would guess I use about 1/4 cup in a full five gallons. People act like it's such a problem to rinse bleach, I promise you, it isn't. I do about a minute of constant spray with a shower want to rinse my buckets whether I use PBW or bleach. Also, despite the prevailing belief, commercial breweries sometimes use it too!
