Still a newbie, but I've been creating a few of my own extract recipes and I've made one that is my new favorite homebrew! Citra Pale Ale (Major newbie mistake.. I forgot to take my OG and FG)

.5 lb Honey Naked Oats - Steep
3 lb Light DME -60 min
1 oz Citra Pellets 12.5% AA -60 min
1 oz Citra Pellets 12.5% AA - 30 min
3 lb Light DME -15 min
1 oz Citra Whole Leaf 13.9% AA 15 min
1 oz Citra Whole Leaf 13.9% AA 5 min

Safale US-05

Dry Hopped 1 oz Citra Whole Leaf 13.9% AA for 10 days in secondary

(I put in a tsp of grapefruit peel and a tsp of sweet orange peel in the primary fermenter - I don't think this added anything to the beer)

If anyone tries this recipe... I'd LOVE to hear what ya think!

Also.... I need a better name than just Citra Pale Ale... ideas?

It certainly looks like a good recipe! I'm a big fan of Citra. Last year I did a SMASH "barleywine" of sorts using only Maris Otter and 11oz of Citra. OG was around 1.095, and FG was 1.008 (WLP099 Super High Gravity yeast is a BEAST!) Six ounces in the boil, five ounces dry hopped for 7 days. It would have been six ounces DH, but one of the bags of hops went bad for some reason.

Anyway, it was quite delicious. I'm definitely going to have to do that one again.

Agreed, Citra definitly provides an amazing flavor! And ya know... ive actually never had a barley wine. ... any recommendations on a good one to try available in the midwest?

Not sure what's available to you, since I'm in the SE. I'd say stay away from Wyerbacher. All of their high gravity beers have a very hot alcohol presence. The ones I've had that I enjoy are Great Divide's Old Ruffian, Bell's Third Coast, Southern Tier's Back Burner, and Smuttynose's Barleywine.

My all-time favorite was Lagunitas' Olde Gnarleywine, but unfortunately, they don't make it any more...
