Hey all,
About 2 weeks ago i brewed a batch of a citra IPA (this is my second batch in about 2 months). Anyway, I was going to dry-hop with 1oz of citra hop pellets, and 1 oz of centennial like i did the last batch, but i am wondering about a possible grapefruit addition.

I have had many people ask me about doing it so i thought i would turn to the experts for how to go about it.

Should I still dry hop, wait a week or so, and then do a grapefruit addition before i bottle?

Should I skip dry-hopping and just do a grapefruit addition. I was thinking about 5 oz of grapefruit peel soaked in vodka for the batch

I have never tinkered with this before so I am asking about the process. any advice would be appreciated. thanks

You can do everything at the same time, it's fairly straight forward

Clean and sanitize the fruit first, and only use zest, I usually do about 4oz or so for 20liters, so it sounds like you're in the ball park

2 weeks in primary sounds about right for any additions fruit or otherwise, you'll get aroma and flavor

Alternatively, you can dry hop first, then add fruit in the last week of fermentation; the problem with this is that you have to open the fermenter again and risk infection. The less you open the fermenter the better

I'd go with everything at the same time

Good luck

I'm currently dry hopping with simcoe and grapefruit zest/peel that I soaked in bourbon. It's the pulpin kit. I'll report back in a couple weeks since I'm bottling this weekend. I also have an IPA I brewed exclusively with galaxy hops that I'll be adding blood orange into the secondary with galaxy dry hopping for a week.

Fruit in IPA's is trendy now, but I'm a sucker for a good IPA.

So, I just brewed the Grapefruit Pulpin Kit that marvzuno mentioned. I'm down to my last 5 bottles of it. The way I did it was the following...

10 days primary
5 days secondary
(racked into secondary on top of dry hops and grapefruit peel)
2 weeks bottle conditioned
2 weeks in fridge

I will say that I feel like the grapefruit came through pretty well after only being in secondary for 5 days. I like the smell/flavor of grapefruit in IPA's so if I were to do it again, I would leave in secondary for another 2 or 3 days on top of that to get more of that flavor. It was kind of a mix of feedback from the 20 or so people I shared with. Some said that they could hardly notice the grapefruit where others said they REALLY noticed it (everyone's palate is different).

Due to feedback from others in regards to how much of a pain in the ass it is to work around the grapefruit peel loose in the fermenter, I used muslin bags to contain the peel and the dry hop additions. Worked fairly well although if I were to do it again, I would again use the bag for the grapefruit peel but I would throw in the hops loose. I feel like I didn't get much dry hop aroma.

Oh, and my peel was soaked in vodka, not bourbon.

Finally tried my Kama Citra last night, the citrus and hop flavors were great with just the 2 oz's, but I def will try another oz of citra the next time around, I enjoyed it and my dad was very impressed with the flavor and it gave a nice baseline so I'm happy with it overall
