Cider ABV calculation question

When calculating the ABV for Cider, which formula do you use...the one for beer: OG - SG x 131.25 = ABV% or the one for wine: OG -FG/7.36 x 1000 = ABV %?
I did both, and my ABV came out to:
Beer formula: 1.064 - 1.002 = 0.062 x 131.25 = 8.1375 %
Wine formula: 1.064 - 1.002 = 0.062/7.36 = 0.0084239130434783 x 1000 = 8.42 %

Which one is right? :confused:
 
I never knew that ABV calculations for wine are different from beer. I multiply the initial gravity by 131 and assume that the figure approximates the ABV close enough. If I were being taxed on whether I was making a wine at 13 percent of 14 percent ABV then I would use a more accurate figure but for all intents and purposes I think (initial SG - final SG )* 131 is good enough (the 131figure is what my hydrometer seems to use)...

I didn't either until i started reading about wine on different sites. I assumed the beer formula worked for all ABV.


I've never heard of the second formula, so I wonder where it came from?

I've been making wine for 25+ years, but your "wine ABV calculation" is brand new to me.

I'm still so new to beer, wine and cider. I'm reading a lot of interesting info, but at the same time, will ask questions to the experienced to confirm what i've read to be true or not. I will definitely listen to 25+ yrs of experience over some random web site i stumbled across.
