So this is the first time I'm try to maintain my fermentation temperature. Placed 1 gal. batch in the chest cooler. When I came back from work there were minimal bubbles forming and when I looked at the temperature it was around 50 degrees. Using safale S-04 and I read those were monsters, hope I didn't put them to sleep too much though

I hope you are using a temp controller? Where are you placing the probe? If your wort is 50 degrees, then yes, you are too cold.

Hey guys it's just a Styrofoam box with ice and I just keep a thermometer in it to track the temperature. I haven't invested in an electronically controlled one yet

How much ice did you have in it? Obviously, too much. ;) For one gallon a frozen water bottle should have been enough.
