Let's face it - i'm not the richest guy. I'm looking for a cheap way to store and serve my cider - what would be the most cost-effective method?

Cost effective? Beer bottles...
Are you trying for still or sparkling, sweet or dry?
Also in what quantities are you planning on serving?
Because these can make a difference.

2 Litre Coke Bottles would be the cheapest I can think of.
If it is still, then the bottles the apple juice came in would be the cheapest option. You already had to buy them for the juice....
Sanitize well and make sure that the fermentation is over so you don't have any issues pop up.
