Caribou Slobber = Bass Ale?

Just cracked my first batch. Gave a couple to my neighbor and he immediately said "This tastes just like Bass Ale." Now, I've never had Bass, so wouldn't know. Would any of you who have brewed Caribou Slobber compare it to Bass?

I've never had CS, but I always assumed, based on the name, that it was supposed to be a clone of Big Sky's Moose Drool brown ale. If this assumption is correct, I wouldn't expect that a Bass pale ale would resemble the taste of a brown. I've had both Moose Drool and Bass and they're really not even close. Both are a bit hoppy, but that's kinda where the similarity ends, IMO.

Unless you really screwed it up(and I'm pretty sure you didn't), CS should look and taste nothing at all like Bass Ale. It's been a couple years since I've had one, but my memory is that BA is a pale ale, a little hoppy, not much malt character.

Well, he IS a BMC drinker, so who knows. Maybe he was just dredging his memory to come up with something to compare it to. Since I've never had either, until two days ago...when I first tried my CS...I have nothing to compare it to. I know I screwed up the cooking a tad and only ended up with 4 gals vs 5, so I wonder if that would have made the difference? If it is, happy coincidence; if you want a Bass clone, according to my neighbor's taste buds, just short your CS by 1 gal LOL.

Anyway, I'm glad to be drinking the first fruits of my labors. I've got one more batch of CS in the secondary and I'm sitting here waiting for a La Petite Orange to cool down from it's boil.

I'd say it's a fairly reasonable comparison for a person who mostly drinks BMC. Not dead on, but in the same quarter of the brew world, so that's not too bad.

Bass Ale compared to lighter beers and BMC is darker and fuller body and richer flavored. This would be noticeable and memorable to a BMC drinker. It's a bit like a pot roast and a leg of lamb being similar to someone who eats only chicken ceaser salads and whose only experience with red meat was a hamburger twice in his life.
