Hi - I used to make wine a long time ago when corks nd bottles were easy to get hold of... now it seems all the bottles are screw cap and i live in a town in NZ where it is difficult to find wine making equipment for sale. Is it safe to put my wine into a screw capped bottle do you think?

Yes, but re-using the original caps won't work, the seal has been crushed. You would be better off using beer bottles and capping them, but some screwtop bottles can be capped.

You can either order screw caps from online or check at your LHBS if you have one.

Is it possible to use used screw caps and bottles for storing Apfelwein? I want to do half a batch carbed and another half without. I won't be putting the carbed into the wine bottles.

The treads are still strong and it seals water just fine but I don't know if it would resist air and spoil the Apfelwein.

Anyone care to weigh in about the wine bottles? I want to bottle this stuff next week if possible. It has been sitting since 11/8/09.

I've found the plastic screw-tops off large (2-litre) water bottles that we get through a lot of are perfect for screw-top wine bottles. The o/d of the bottle is slightly larger then the i/d of the top so it really grips and the seal in the top seems to fit snugly. I don't know if it would last years, but 6 months so far, so good.
