Hello

On a whim, I decided to throw together a 2.5 gal batch of a Pale Ale. I haven't done one in a while, and didn't put a whole lot of effort into it. But to be honest, I just added hops for dry hopping and when I smelt the fermenter, it was the best I have done to this point..

Anyways, what do ya'll think of this recipe? Probably light on the grain bill. I lika de hop tho lol

OPA (Orange Pale Ale) 2-3 gal (AG)

American ale yeast

3 lbs 2 Row
1/2 lbs crystal malt (40L)
1/2 lbs wheat malt
1/4 lbs flaked barley
1/4 lbs flaked maize

1 oz cascade 60 min
1/2 oz cascade 40 min
1/2 oz cascade 20 min
1/2 oz nugget 10 min
1/2 oz nugget 5 min

1/4 oz dried orange peel 20 min
1/4 oz dried orange peel 5 min

1/2 tsp Irish moss 10 min

In primary for 1 month as of today.

Dry hop (today):
1 oz amarillo (3-5 days)
1/2 oz dried orange peel (3-5 days)

I am going to move to my secondary to let it settle in a few days then bottle.

I was not aware Pale ale used any wheat. When considering a "traditional style" guideline for ingredients.

Actually, using some wheat in any ale is quite common to aid with head retention. The recipe will produce a very low alcohol beer though.

Are you using bitter or sweet orange peel? I prefer an once of each at 10 or 15min left.

Have you considered adding coriander as well?

I used sweet orange peel. I hadn't thought of anything else to add, just kind of grabbed what I knew of and went with it.

I may get lucky, my primary sucked in some of my airlock vodka lol

I don't see the point in a 40 minute hop addition. I'd just make the 60 bigger. I'd also add the orange peel at flame out (but I would not even use any in a pale ale.)

I've never used orange peels, but the rest looks okay. Bit of a kitchen sink, but nothing in excess. I'd probably use the forty minute Cascade at 10 minutes or flameout, but I'm sure it will be good as is.

I would double the 2row.

Add the orange peel for the last 15 minutes of the boil.

Change the 40 minute addition to 30.

Well I wanted a orange kick. My local brew house had a pretty talented guy that worked there who left to go on his own and they always had HB beer on tap there. The best one I have ever tried of his was what he called a CPA... citrus pale ale. I love dogfish heads 90 min IPA so i wanted to go for a consistent dosage of hops.. not to the extreme of dogfish head but at least pretty regular

I love the idea of using orange peels in a hopped up pale. Let us know how it turns out.
