Light beer calories mostly come from the alcohol.

Yuengling is only 4.3%, Bud is only 5%, and Bud Light Platinum is 6% ABV.

20% more alcohol = 20% more calories.

Anyone that gets their panties in a bunch over a few extra calories in a beer shouldn't be drinking beer...

I don't think his panties are in a bunch over the calories themselves. It's the marketing that it is lite...which is ain't.

Actually it is. Think about it, it has more alcohol than Bud, but fewer calories. Therefore, it has fewer non-alcohol calories than Bud.

Ok, I get it now. But it sorta like saying a Sperm whale is a small whale.....but neglecting to say "compared to a blue". Marketing at it's best.

Marketing isn't meant to be reality, especially when it comes to beer. Beer marketing typically is either meant to be humorous, or to make you think you're cool by drinking the product.

My take is that they are trying to figure out how to get into "malt liquor" territory alcohol-wise without having to call it as such. Is the word "beer" anywhere on the package? I don't see it.

Oh really? I'm a craft beer lover and a homebrewer, and I also happen to be dieting, exercising and counting calories in an effort to lose some weight. Do I have no business drinking beer because I care how many calories are in what I'm drinking?

I think the most deceptive part of the marketing for this beer is the way they justify making the cheapest beer possible:

"It is delicately hopped (only 4.0 IBU) to showcase the slight sweetness" (Taken from a display sign in the supermarket I buy from)

They are capitalizing on how in the dark they have kept the average consumer about hoppy beers being gross, too bitter, etc. and continuing to push cheaper and cheaper products on the masses. Sure, I respect the difficulty in producing such a consistent brew millions of times a year, but seriously? A Berliner Weiss has more IBUs than that!

Way to take take what I said way too seriously... my point was someone complaining about the difference between the 'threshold' for light beer of 115 calories vs 137 in Bud Platinum shouldn't be drinking beer.

What's 22 calories?
5 M&Ms
2 Pringles
1/8 of a Krispy Kreme glazed donut
1/10 of a slice of cheese pizza

If 22 essentially empty calories in any form will upset you, you shouldn't be drinking beer or eating junk food....

The answer is yes. If you are dieting you have no business drinking beer. I am dieting and guess what? No beer, no wine and no liquor. Dieting SUCKS. Why would you draw it out? I'm brewing a lager so that when it's done I can drink it because I will be done with my weight loss goal.

AND further... if you decide to reward yourself say once every two or three weeks with a beer, you should drink whatever the hell you want without worrying about how many calories.

Meantime...drink water.

AND EVEN further... he was just making a lighthearted comment. the diet must be making you tense. I know I'm in a terrible mood because of it.

I hate that they are making higher abv beers..some of my friends that live and die by bud/coors are asking me if I've had platinum and swear its the greatest thing ever. They think they are craft brew drinkers and are looking for my approval since I've been drinking craft beer since I was 18.

"Dude, have you had bud platinum? I think I like craft beer now."

How much alcohol does a beer have to have before it is labeled malt liquor? Or has that changed?

I've never seen anything under 6% ABV labeled as a malt liquor. Bud Light Platinum seems to be making rounds with many of my friends.. They seem more impressed with the blue bottle more than the flavor. I pity the fool.

If they drink anything with an IBU over 8, they cringe as if they're drinking diarrhea .

Ha! I actually get that feeling when drinking Delirium Tremens. I liked it the first few times I had it, but I guess that was after I had already had a few...I tried it a few months ago at Burger & Beer Joint in Miami Beach completely sober and didn't really like it all that much.

HOWEVER... when I would make American Light and add some Hallertau hops it was very popular with my buddies (as in, empty keg) even though I would add A LOT of corn sugar to up it to 7%. But then again, I bet most of them had already had a couple of rum and Cokes on the way to the party..
