Hi, I noticed when I racked my crab apple wine the first time 1 of the two carboys has clinging bubbles to the inside of the glass.. the other does not. Does this mean anything?

Some things to note the bubbles were also there when cleaning the carboys and the carboy with bubbles looked to have a hairline crack in the bottom but it didn't seem to go through and the carboy held water for a week without seepage. The carboy with the bubbles was also filled 2nd so has more of the wine from the bottom of the fermentor.

Is air infiltrating through the hairline crack even though it holds water? Is it just a different type of glass? Anyone ever see this.

Ok. I've had the odd acclusion / defect in glass carboys and they haven't given me trouble. Sometimes they look like cracks, chips, or bubbles in the glass.

Carefully look at the bubbles. Do they move? Are they inside the glass? It would be an extreme case but it's possible these are glass defects you are seeing and why you see them when cleaning and when it's full of liquid.

I have came to the conclusion this carboy possibly has a more "etched" surface than some others. I know glass is fairly inert BUT it used to be a Heinz container so maybe if it stored vinegar the surface has micro etching that holds the bubbles.

Yeah the bubbles are there and move when you tap and whatnot but will just sit there otherwise which is why I came up with the theory that the glass is etched at a level finer than my sight.

It's going well and I stopped worrying lol
