Anyone in Hoarders interested in a Hoarders/Upland Secret Barrel split? I know, I know, Upland sucks because beer isn't included but if anyone is interested, PM me and we can figure out the specifics.

Do they smoke their own make own malt or buy it? That could be the PTA in making it if they smoke the malt themselves.

Smoking Wood? Why is it a pain in the ass?

Honestly, I don't recall what exactly caused them an issue (I was drinking when he described the process, and I also don't know a thing about brewing). It was either a messier job, a stickier job, or something along those lines. Whatever the cause was, it made the brewing times longer for it. I'm sure it not selling well and the hate it receives online had something to do with it too.

Messier/stickier would imply that the rye malt is the issue as rcubed guessed. Makes sense, but the sales and complaints have to be the core issue since they continue brewing Sour in the Rye.

Do you realize how many cigarettes the entire Bruery staff has to smoke atop the fermentor? It's not yeast at the bottom of each bottle, it's ash.

(I feel a bit guilty for piling on. I actually like Smoking Wood, but the reality is that I like other beers better -- which is why my bottles of SW perpetually remain in my cellar. It's not exactly the type of beer you pull out for friends thinking, "I bet everyone will universally appreciate this and ask for more!")

Both beers use rye, which can be difficult to brew with in large quantities. Their system might not handle it very well.

Isn't sour in the rye like 25% or more rye?

Edit: approx. 40%
I know a brewer at Sierra Nevada and they only use 10% rye in that rye IPA they do and said it is due to stickiness. I have used 25% with no issue, but obviously different systems by a bit.

Some new beer info in today's email...

We know that there are a number of new beers on the list available at TheBrueryStore.com so we wanted to let you in on what is planned for some of the new beer series, beginning with the Arbre Series. This will be 3 different versions of the same beer. The beer will be a low roast, biscuity imperial stout (maybe a bit more like an imperial porter) that we will age in three different new American oak barrels, showcasing what different levels of oak char do to the flavor of the beer. We will use a "light toast" barrel, a "medium plus" toast barrel and an "alligator char #3" barrel - which is pretty much as dark as you can get.

I consistently miss reading these extra tidbits of info.

While the concept sounds cool from a learning/tasting experience, i very much dislike virgin barrels (which i assume these are) so i dont forsee myself enjoying/buying much of this "series."

Did they ever say what the chronological series is? Is it possibly the anniversay beers but instead of giving us 38 different barrel iterations, they are giving us the same barrels but aged at different increments? If thats the case, thats ******* brilliant. Basically making 3 different variations from the same beer just pulling it out of the barrels at different times.

If they have done away with the anniversary beers, i will be disappointed. I loved drinking a bottle by myself dancing on the edge of drunktardedness and beetus.

No idea what the allocations are for Wineification this time around, but if anyone isn't maxing, let me know. My son is due to arrive in about six weeks and I'm naming him Wineification II so this is extremely special to me. If the allocations are really small I'll just go **** myself.

2 included with Hoarders membership. 3 more available for purchase, if I remember correctly.

It seems like quite some time ago that we promised you a couple of super exclusive beers brewed on our 3bbl pilot system, just for you. We know, it's already October, but when thinking as far outside of the box as we have for our "Old Fashioned" inspired beer, it takes a while to develop and test a recipe. That beer, now known as Geriatric Hipster Club™, is finishing up right now and we will have bottles of it for you as soon as possible. Below is a link to a video of our Experimental Brewer, Andrew Bell, talking about the process that we have created for capturing this classic cocktail within a beer.
In addition to Geriatric Hipster Club, we had a vote on a fruited HottenrothBerliner Weisse to be bottled up just for you. The winning fruit, as voted on by our members, was one of our personal favorites - mango! We're working to get this beer brewed and packaged for you right now. Berliner Weisse style ales take a bit longer than most to ferment, but we plan on having this beer available to you very soon.
Have a great weekend, don't forget to put your orders in for this year's Black Tuesday® and be sure to share your passion, letting your beer friends know that our Reserve Society™ will be opening up to new members on October 29th.

Looks like mango won as fruit. The old Fashion video sounds kinda cool, will try both.
