I'm 24 hours into my first brew. All seems to be going well except a brown stain that has developed on the lid of the fermenter:

(apologies for rotated photo)

  • Is this something I should be worrying about?
  • Any ideas what might have caused it?

Many thanks!

It looks like krausen on the inside of your fermenter. Is your lid translucent at all?

Totally normal, yeast and proteins create that foamy layer on the beer during fermentation. IT rises and falls and leaves crud all over your fermenter.

Great, thanks. And yeah, the lid is slightly translucent.

Def krausen. I can see it right below the stain, about the same color. You have a good ferment going there!

Thanks!

I'm probably worrying more than I need to.. will feel better if/when this first batch turns out OK.

Just try & keep your temps steady & within range. When it hits FG,give it another 3-7 days to clean up & settle out clear or slightly misty before packaging.

Thanks – am keeping a careful eye on the temperature (the Brew Belt certainly helps).
