Hey guys,

I was hosting a Monday Brew Day we were making a simple cream ale recipe.

7lbs of Rahr American 2 Row
.25 Begium Biscuit Malt
.75 Honey Malt
1oz Cascade

Well, we got the strike water up to the mashing temp, and while I stirred my friend was supposed to pour the bag of grains in slowly. Well...slowly turned in to the bag slipping and dropping an undetermined about of grain. If I had to guess it was mostly 2 row b/c of the ratios...and I also assumed that maybe we loss 4-8 ounces but this is a total guess. So I added probably another .25 of biscuit and .25 or so of Honey Malt in the mash to make up some of the difference (I didn't have any more 2 row available or I would of just used that exclusively) So...how do you think the flavors will be effected in this case?

Mashed at 148-150 range 60 mins and 170 for 10 mins.
Sparged for 30 mins
OG 1.52 post boil.
The color of the wort is great, couldn't be more clear, the smell is fine too.

Thoughts?

My thought is if it looks good and smells good it's got to taste good. And if not it should still give you a buzz. It's still going to be beer and that's better then water.

I don't think I understand what happened. What was this mysterious bag of 2 row? How were you measuring what was being put in? Or do you just eyeball it?

In the bag was all of the grain for the recipe combined, I bought the grains in bulk, then measured and had it all in a bag ready to go using all that was left of my 2 row. Once an unknown amount of grain was spilled on the garage floor by accident, I then eye balled some extra honey malt and Belgium biscuit into the mash to ..make up for it.. I guess... not sure how that will effect the flavor of my beer, I don't want it to be to sweet or yeasty from those grain additions I added, or if thats even a possibility. This is only my second all grain brew.

Gotcha. I would have swept those grains up and put them back in the tun. After all, they were in a field at one point not all too long before you bought them.

Anyways, to answer your original question I would have to say don't worry about it. You may have just found your new favorite beer recipe.

Id be lair if I said I didn't think about doing just that. Me and the two guys I was with looked at it for awhile, all probably thinking that but didn't want to be "that guy" who took it off the floor LOL :mug:

This is exactly right.
If you think that a little dirt in your grains is a terrible thing, you would suffer a small stroke if you saw the amount of weevils that were probably on it at some point.
