i want to buy a coopers diy kit, and i will brew the beer that comes with it but i was also curious if i could use it for other types of alchoholic beverages like mead, hard cider, and wine or would i need to buy all new equiptment to do all that

No problem at all. Usual sanitation procedures apply. The only caution is that if you intend to brew sour beers such as lambics using Brett yeast, you should keep that equipment separate. Otherwise, it's all good.

Cheers!

your fermenters, carboys, etc... do not care what type of beverage gets fermented in them. The yeast will ferment any liquid with sugar in it. Like Frazier mentioned, be sanitary, and all will be OK!

Thanks for your help. How successful are people usually on their first brew

That depends on the brewer I'd imagine. As long as you pay close attention to your sanitation practices you should be able to turn out decent beer on your first go. My first was an Irish Red that I liked. It was a touch sweet but I also got stuck at 1.020. My neighbors compared it to other craft brews which I had a hard time believing, lol. I bought a 6 pack of Killians after I ran out of that beer and realized I liked the flavor of it a lot more than I did Killians. Again, that was my first batch.

Just follow directions and sanitize properly and you'll surely have a good first brew!

Cheers
