I'm so excited. Here's a picture of my 55lb sack. Of 2 row. So pumped!! 38.95 seems like a fair price.

Nice sack! Wait that didn't sound right.

I have sack envy I guess.

I just did my second AG and will be moving to bulk grains soon after I invest in a crusher. That price doesn't sound bad to me. You should be able to get about 5-6 brew out of that right?

{blush} it's always nice to get complements on my sack.

5 brews is about right. I'm stoked to be at like .80/lb rather than 1.50!

Now I just have to keep my sack clean, cool, and dry. And keep the bugs out of my sack. Does the cockroach have a cousin sackroach?

Awesome!!!

I'm going with bulk grain with my next brew. If you room for storage, then cost wise it's the best thing to do...

The faster you brew the less storage needed!!

Yes, great price on that, I think the place I get mine from is about $1 a pound.

Remember, take good care of your sack and your sack will take care of you!

You laugh now... as it turns out, malt is a cockroaches favorite food. Oh, and nice sack.

Do this and it should keep the bugs away! Also make sure you watch where you are sticking it!

By the way where did you score that killer deal?

So if I take care of my sack by keeping it cool, dry and keeping the bugs away how long until it goes bad? Maybe stale?

I know... Until I use it all.

But seriously how long would this last?

Cheers

nice banjo............ group buys are the way to go. I have 7 bags of grain coming to me in about a month or less from the MD/DC grain group buy. can't wait!

From what I've read on this board it will keep roughly a year in an airtight container uncrushed.

It won't last five months at my house though! I've got a few big beers planned!

Group buys are great if they are convenient. I'll take my spur of the moment $39 sack though. I just don't need the volume, headache, or the drive to meet up with my nearest group buy (about 200 miles away).

Awesome. Your sack size is dwarfing that of your instrument, though. Very unfortunate!

I bought 2 sacks of the same malt 2 weeks ago ($33 a bag as B&G had 15% off sale that day), i keep the grain in homedepo buckets ($4 with lid), they are air tight and stackable

I've never seen such a colorful sack as yours. The sacks I buy are in a plain brown paper sack with black lettering (Great Western Malting) I pay $50 for 50#. I store mine in two Home Depot "Homer" buckets.

Brew with it yet? I hear CMC is good stuff.

There is a LHBS here in Portland that you can buy a "virtual bag of grain". What you do is pay the going rate for a sack of grain and then they just record how much you get until you have used up the 50 lbs. That way the "sack" is always fresh. Seems like a cool concept. Great if you don't have a lot of storage like me.

I love Portland. Great idea. Hope it catches on!

i cant wait, should pick up my first sack this weekend, 35 bucks for a similar sack. Anybody have any luck getting bulk pricing from a small local craft brewery?, i want to ask but not sure if its a faux pas

I asked the LHBS here in New Orleans about buying a "virtual bag" and he just kind of gave me a weird look. In my opinion I think he wants the bag out of his shop after you buy it. Hahaa... He did say he'd mill the grain for free whenever I needed. Now I just need to find good storage.

Got in on my first group buy this summer. Grapped 2 55pounders of 2 row for $58 and a 90min roundtrip pickup. Keep your eyes on the group buy threads, they are well worth the effort. Cheers muggers!

I pay 60 for a sack of grain... It sucks.

You and me both, and probably from the same place.

I recently got my first sack, too- and the same malt. Brewed up an Arrogant Bastard clone (15 of the 55lbs gone in a few hours!) and am planning about 20 more pounds used soon. This, if it keeps, is the way to go! Kyle

So 50 lbs fits into 2 buckets? Does anyone use anything different for airtight storage?

Look at Vittles Vaults... you can usually find them at Petco or any other well stocked pet store. They are expensive, but very nice.

Malteurop is fantastic and is local to us here in MT so it is a win-win in Big Sky Country.

Nope. As long as the lid is lined with a gasket and air tight it is fine. I have both buckets and the vittle vaults and considering that I can get a bucket and lined lid for $5 from Tractor Supply or any other farm and ranch store versus paying $30+ for a vittle vault the decision is a no-brainer. I think that the seal on the bucket is much more secure than that on the vittle vault. I actually gave the vittle vaults to my wife to use for their intended use - pet food.

I do find that I need 2+ buckets for a 55lb bag of grain. The extra will fit into a ziplock.

Any reason to not just re-seal the bag the grain came in? This Canada malting bag is plastic lined and can be sealed back airtight with a little twist and zip-tie action.
