Oh well. Just made my first attempt at home brew. Guess I hosed it up somehow. Thought I followed the instructions pretty religiously. Without going through each step, any suggestions as to why the yeast is not activating in the glass carboy?

The yeast went in about 17 hours ago. The attempted brew is an amber. The ingredients are: Alexander's Pale Malt Extract; specialty malts are Crystal 40 L, Carastan 35 L, with light roasted barley; and the hops used are Chinook and Saaz; and the yeast is White Labs British Ale liquid yeast.

Yeast was stored in the refrigerator and brought out about 6 hours before I pitched the yeast.

Any ideas?

I had a high gravity Imperial IPA that didn't take off for almost 5 days.. low pitching rate got me, but then, like a miracle, my yeast started eating away, and wouldnt you know, it tasted amazing. The biggest lesson I've learned in homebrewing is patience. You'll be fine.

If it was the yeast in the bag, activating it is key. There is a little packet inside that must be broken in to allow yeast activation. Let warm to rm temp. Bust the packet and allow for activation according to the directions. Another problem is that your beer is fermenting at a low temperature. Ales 67-72 degrees... This is all based on me short experiences with homebrewing

Thanks, will do. The closet has the right temp. Patience is something I have practice with. My girlfriend, a Yooper herself, says thanks.
